The Professor and Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Robert Higgins, will be honored by the District 39 Educational Foundation.
Dr. Robert Higgins, Wilmette resident, the John H. and Mildred Lumley Medical Research Chair, Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Ohio State University, will be honored by the District 39 Educational Foundation with a Distinguished Citizen Award. Higgins will be honored in an award ceremony and reception on Thurs. April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette. Dr. Higgins is a heart and lung transplant surgeon and has written over 100 per-reviewed papers and book chapters, a press release from the foundation states. With 23 out of 24 precincts reporting at the time of publication, a group of four candidates who ran together have taken the lead.
Update 11:14 p.m. At the time of publication, 23 out of 24 precincts were reporting. Hauser has the lowest percent of the votes as of 11:14 p.m. The four leading candidates — lcantara, Flanagin, Steen and Levine — all ran together. Four out of the five candidates will be elected to the Board. These results do not include early voting, voting by mail or provisional ballots. Any votes for write-in candidates will be counted within a week after the election. Five candidates are running for four positions in the District 39 Wilmette School Board. Former Glencoe resident Barbara Savitt died March 27 at the age of 81.
Barbara Savitt, who served for 27 years at Wilmette Public Schools District 39, passed away at the age of 81 on March 27, after a brief battle with cancer, Wilmette Life reported. Cathy Flemming, a former Harper Elementary School teacher while Savitt served as the school’s principal, says Savitt was great at spontaneous community building, as well as supporting students and teachers through her decades of teaching and administration, Wilmette Life reported.

Wilmette Public School District 39's Educational Foundation will award Dr. Robert Higgins with the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award during a special reception on April 25, according to the foundation’s website. Dr. Higgins, a heart and lung transplant specialist and a cardiothoracic surgeon, is the sixth recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award, which honors local community members who have made an exceptional contribution to the community and the world. The Wilmette resident and father of three is known within the District 39 community, as a coach of youth football, baseball and lacrosse, and has also lectured on the cardiovascular system through examination and dissection in the biology labs. Both Wilmette Elementary Schools District 39 and Kenilworth School District 38 were given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. The districts have a total of six schools named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award. Central Elementary School, Harper Elementary School, Marie Murphy School, McKenzie Elementary School, Romona Elementary School and the Joseph Sears School are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award.
