How to Watch Christina Loukas Dive in the 2012 Olympics

Deerfield High School graduate and Riverwoods native Christina Loukas will be competing in the 3-meter springboard at the London Olympics. Loukas’ diving competition at the Olympics will stretch over three days August 3. On August 3 competition begins at 8:30 a.m., Chicago time. Loukas will have five dives. Should her cumulative score on the five dives be one of the 18 highest scores, the she native will advance to Saturday’s semifinals. On August 4, again at 8:30 a.m. here, the 18 divers will complete their five dives.  The highest 12 scores will then advance to the August 5 finals which will begin at 7 p.m. London time or 1 p.m. here. It will be coffee and bagels with Christina if you want to catch the Riverwoods native and Deerfield High School graduate in this 2012 Olympics this year. Christina Loukas, who graduated from Deerfield High School in 2004, will be one of the area’s few representatives at the Olympics in London, which open this Friday. Earlier: North Suburban Olympian’s Journey Twists and Turns “Londonbound” is what Loukas tweeted last week when she left for the Olympics. If you want to watch Loukas compete live, you will need to get up early since London is six hours ahead of the time here in Midwest. The diving competition at the Olympics will stretch over three days beginning Friday, Aug. 3. On that Friday competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Chicago time. …

Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27: Erin Purdy is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. The Trevians' winter sports are heading to the post season with high expectations.

GYMNASTICS: Coach Jennifer Vargas has been waiting for her team to put it together. She knew they had the talent to put up high scores, but the consistency wasn’t there. But in their last dual meet before the post season, New Trier had their breakthrough match, posting their highest team score in a win against Warren, 144.15 – 134.9. The win included personal high scores for Monica Wolf and Elana Benishay. “[Elana] has always had the talent; she’s kind of still developing and gaining a little bit more confidence,” Vargas said. “She’s been fine-tuning and it finally hit.” New Trier competes in the Regional finals next Friday. The swimming and diving team defeated the defending state champions while the fencing team went 3-1 in its season debut.

Wrestling: The New Trier wrestling team is gaining experience with every passing week. They defeated Glenbrook South, 66-6, and finished in 6th place at the 33rd annual Hoffman Estates Hawk Wrestling Invitational. New Trier's lone first-place finish at the invitational came from sophomore Chris Alcock. He improved his record to 9-0 and defeated fifth-ranked Matt Sommers of Notre Dame by a score 5-4 in the championship match. "Chris has worked extremely hard last summer and off season to improve his wrestling skills after an injury kept him out the majority of last season," coach Marc Tadelman said. The swimming team is looking to bounce back after a disappointing third-place finish at state last season.

New Trier wrestling coach Marc Tadelman isn't looking at this year's win-loss record as the ultimate indicator of success. Instead, Tadelman is using this season as preparation for next year, when he believes his team will be state contenders. New Trier's wrestling team is young—they start only two seniors on the varsity squad—but Tadelman thinks the underclassmen will take big strides with more training and match experience. "We did lose a lot, but we have a lot of kids who have put in some time during the offseason," Tadelman said. "We have some holes, but we're giving some sophomores and juniors a chance to adapt to the varsity level of competition." Through two dual meets and two quad matches, New Trier stands at 4-5 overall.
