The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. According to CyberDriveIllinois.com's 2013 DUI Fact Book, there were 10,175 DUI arrests in Cook County in 2011; 10,903 DUI arrests in 2010; and 11,375 DUI arrests in 2009. DUI facts from…

He was charged with DUI, then with speeding more than 40 mph over the speed limit.
Andrew Galperin, 22, of Wilmette was charged with DUI in Niles on Jan. 16, released on an bond and, in a separate incident the next day, charged with speeding more than 40 mph over the speed limit. In the first incident, which happened at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, Niles police said an intoxicated Galperin accelerated a gray Subaru hatchback out of the driveway of a restaurant in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue so fast that the car's traction system lost control and the car fishtailed. Galperin was trying to go northbound, but the car instead went into the southbound lanes of Milwaukee Avenue. The car then entered the 9026 Milwaukee Avenue parking lot by driving over a curb and sidewalk, then went to the rear of the business area. When …

If you insist on driving after a few drinks, here's what you should know about how alcohol affects your system
Do you know how many drinks you can have before you're in danger of getting a drunken driving violation? As we head into the holiday season, Patch wants to help you determine when enough is enough. When police pull drivers over for suspected drunken driving, officers ask them to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test to measure Blood Alcohol Content. A BAC test measures the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. Illinois's legal limit is 0.08. According to the Virginia Tech Alcohol Abuse Prevention website, every 40 minutes, 0.01 percent of alcohol leaves your system. Check out the chart in the media portion of this article to see what your limit is. For more news and updates, "like" us on Facebook or …

The 10 topics that most interested readers during the past year were stories about local eateries, noteworthy crimes, unfortunate accidents and exceptional residents.
Now that the year is nearing its end, it offers an opportunity to look back on which stories most interested Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch readers. What story did you follow most closely? 1. C.J. Arthur’s closed in September, but the space could soon be home to a new gastropub. Residents must have felt down after we reported that C.J. Arthur’s, one of Wilmette’s few live music spots, would be closing its doors at the end September after serving the North Shore for 23 years. Yet, less than three months later, we broke a story that a group of eight Wilmette families had leased the former C.J. Arthur’s storefront with an aim to turn the space into a new gastropub by late next spring. News of a potential family-friendly tavern and eatery serving “…

The night before Thanksgiving is known as the biggest party night of the year. Almost a holiday unto itself with a name of its own, Black Wednesday is a night to rival New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day for overindulgence in alcohol. In many communities, extra officers will be on patrol and local officials warn bar owners not to overserve their patrons. So it's not a coincidence that Cook County this week announced a new DUI Memorial Program. For $150, families of anyone killed in a DUI fatality can purchase a roadside memorial marker to be placed alongside any highway under the county's jurisdiction. The marker includes a “Please Don’t Drink and Drive” sign and an optional commemorative plaque with the deceased loved one’s name and …

What ridiculous comments. "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink." "You're going to put restaurants out of business." If testing has been done (which was not mentioned and should be done if it hasn't) and it shows that driving is impaired enough when one's blood alcohol content is .05, then lower it. Should we really worry about restaurants …   more ›
