Olympic Trials Notebook: New Trier Grad CJ Smith

Now attending University of Minnesota, Smith is among a number of area young men and women competing at the U.S. Olympic Swim Team Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Several local young men and women are now competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Swim Team at the trials in Omaha, Neb.  Nineteen-year-old CJ Smith, a Wilmette native and sophmore at the University of Minnesota, is one of those hopefuls.  "It's healthy nerves here, people are just very excited," Smith said.  Smith will be competing in the 1500-meter freestyle event this weekend. He has already competed in the 400-meter freestyle, but did not place high enough to earn an Olympic spot for that event.  "I unfortunately got too quick of a start," Smith said.  Smith has a healthy perspective about the competition, and is thrilled for others, including one young man from the North Shore who has earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Swim Team. …

West Nile mosquitoes are out more than a month earlier in Wilmette than in 2011, when the first pool tested positive in August, according to Dave Zazra, communications manger for NSMAD.  On June 18, mosquitoes in Evanston were the first to test positive for the virus among the 13 communities NSMAD manages. Illinois has reported 17 batches of mosquitoes that tested positive for virus so far this year, according to CBS Chicago.  West Nile Virus Likes Hot, Dry Weather The hot and dry weather are two factors promoting the virus and the mosquitoes’ development.  “The hot …

Kenilworth trustees approved purchasing 100 percent renewable energy as part of the village's electricity aggregation program.

Kenilworth finalized its electricity purchasing agreement with energy provider mc2 this week, according to a press release.  Residents and small businesses taking part in the electricity aggregation program will pay 4.11 cents per kilowatt-hour for 100 percent renewable energy. The rate is 45 percent lower than the Commonwealth Edison’s summer rate Kenilworth residents pay as of June 20, according to the village.  The village estimates the average Kenilworth residential customer will save some $600 from September through May 2013. With about 875 residential and small business customers eligible to receive electricity under this agreement, Kenilworth expects to save more than $500,000 in energy costs during that time period.  "The Village …

New Trier Attracting New Businesses Despite Economy

The five New Trier communities generally have lower vacancy rates for retail properties than the rest of the Chicago area.

In spite of the recession and its sluggish aftermath, new businesses are still moving into New Trier Township communities.  With the exception of Glencoe, the communities all have vacancy rates below the 9.5 percent average for the Chicago area. Many of the communities have vacancy rates more in line with the boom days of 2004 to 2007, when the area's rate was less than 8 percent for all but one quarter. Patch surveyed the communities to get business development and municipal officials' takes on the business climate in each one. Want to follow similar articles?
