C.J. Arthur’s to Close End of September

After serving the North Shore for more than 20 years, a Wilmette business will be closing its doors.

C.J. Arthur’s, one of Wilmette’s few live music spots will be closing its doors at the end of the month after serving the North Shore for 23 years.  “They are leaving at the end of September, their last day will be Sept. 29,” said Martha Koch, property manager for the building at 1168 Wilmette Ave., where C.J. Neighbors Surprise Family with Wheelchair-Accessible Van

'We Are Not A Community of Strangers.' Residents and organizations from Wilmette and Glenview helped raised money to buy a van for a Romona Elementary School family whose daughter has a severe neurological disorder.

When Wilmette firefighter Ben Wozney learned that a neighbor could not afford a much-needed wheelchair-accessible van, he decided to take action.  In just over a month, Wozney, along with his neighbors, and Wilmette and Glenview organizations were able to raise $8,000 to buy a wheelchair-accessible van for the Kurtz family.  “It was just extraordinary touching,” David Kurtz said tearing up when the community presented the van to the family Tuesday. “It’s amazing the outpouring and generosity of people, it came entirely unexpected to me.”  Watch a video of the community surprising the Kurtz family on the right. New Trier High School Alum Stars in Bravo TV Show

Julia Allison put her love life on display as part of 'Miss Advised.'

Winnetka native and Wilmette Junior High School alum Julia Allison had written about relationships for Time Out New York and Cosmo, but had said she was done with what she described as “the Carrie Bradshaw portion of my life” when Bravo asked her to be on a show about relationship experts. She turned them down, but they kept asking, so she eventually agreed, not expecting the concept to go anywhere. Instead Miss Advised was picked up in June 2011, and she became one of three single women showing the world the inner workings of her own romantic history. “I was delving into one of the most painful areas of my life, which was my personal relationships,” Allison said. “It certainly wasn’t easy, but I came out on the other side quite …

Lifetime of Food Passion Fills Artisanal Wilmette

The store located at the former Demas Fine Foods, on 414 Linden Ave., is scheduled to open Sept. 7. The business owners hope to partner with New Trier High School programs in the future.

Growing up, Marsha Pesavento loved lingering around the “fancy” food section of grocery stores in New York. Now Pesavento, along with her husband Ray, will be pouring that passion into a new grocery store in Wilmette.  “When I was 6-years-old I loved hanging out and looking at the canned escargot and all this wild stuff that was so exciting,” Marsha said. “I’ve always loved grocery stores.”  The 3,200-square-foot store at 414 Linden Ave. will focus on selling artisanal foods made by people who are completely and wholly integrated into the creation of their product, from sourcing raw materials to the actual production and packaging.  “We feel it’s critical to support local business, as that only strengthens our community,” Ray said.  …
