Winnetka to Honor Conor Dwyer Aug. 25

Residents are invited to celebrate the Loyola Academy alum’s gold medal win at the 2012 London Olympics.

Winnetka will be naming Aug. 25 "Conor Dwyer Day" in honor of the Winnetka native and Loyola Academy alum for winning a gold medal during the 2012 Olympics. Dwyer won a gold medal as part of the U.S. 800-meter freestyle relay team swimming with Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Ricky Bernes in London on July 31. The 23-year-old also helped fellow teammate Phelps to win the most medals in Olympic history. The Village of Winnetka and Winnetka Park District will be honoring the swimmer’s accomplishments during an event at 10 a.m., Aug. 25, at Hubbard Woods Park Gazebo. Residents will also have the opportunity to meet, greet and take a photo with Dwyer. The North Shore native is also expected to visit his alma mater and join Loyola Academy’s …

Kenilworth’s Joseph Sears School, Best Public School in Cook County

New Trier High School ranked second based on ‘Chicago Magazine’ ranking of public schools.

Kenilworth’s Joseph Sears School took the top spot for best elementary school in Cook County, according to rankings released by Chicago Magazine Thursday.  That’s a huge leap for the Kenilworth School District 38 school, which was ranked 18th by Chicago Magazine in 2010.  New Trier Township High School was ranked the second best public high school in Cook County behind Glenbrook North High School.  Using a formula based on spending per student, student-teacher ratio and scores on state tests, among other factors, the magazine issued rankings of the top 20 elementary schools and top 20 high schools in suburban Cook County.  Wilmette’s Marie Murphy School placed fourth in the ranking among Cook County elementary schools. One Jewish Congregation in Wilmette Finally Finds Permanent Home

Nearly two decades have passed since Sukkat Shalom first formed in Wilmette. Starting in September, they will finally have a place to call their own.

After 17 years, one Jewish congregation in Wilmette will finally be moving into a permanent worship space where it hopes to provide even more spiritual resources to the community. "We want to be another religious presence in the community," said Rabbi Samuel Gordon of Sukkat Shalom. "We've chosen this building as part of our mission." Congregation Sukkat Shalom is scheduled to relocate to 1001 Central Ave. on Sept. 1. The new building will include an expanded sanctuary, better lighting within the sanctuary, and an entire kitchen for the social hall area, where Gordon hopes to hold Thanksgiving dinners as part of the Sukkat Shalom's focus on interfaith diversity. Wilmette Blotter: $95,000 Fake Check, $2,100 Tool Kit Stolen, Theft

These are the crimes, thefts and major traffic stops reported by the Wilmette Police Department between Aug. 6 and 13. Burglary to Auto A tool kit and other electronic boards were reported stolen from a car parked in the 3100 block of Old Glenview Road between Aug. 6 and 8. Entry into the vehicle was gained by breaking out the driver’s side window. The loss is estimated at $2,150.  Theft A duffel bag containing a cell phone and other sports equipment were reported stolen from a vehicle parked at Loyola Academy, 1100 Laramie Rd., on Aug. 10. The loss is estimated at $280. An iPhone accidently left at a woman’s restroom at Walker Brothers, 153 Green bay Rd., was later reported stolen on Aug. 5.  A Skokie resident reported leaving her wallet …

Conor Dwyer Back in Winnetka, Ready to Relax

The Loyola Academy alum returned home Monday after winning a gold medal as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay in the London Olympics.

Winnetka native Conor Dwyer returned home Monday with a gold medal around his neck. While he’s excited to have helped Michael Phelps win the most medals in Olympic history, Dwyer’s also ready to relax.  “I definitely need to recharge the batteries a little bit,” Dwyer told Winnetka Talk. The 23-year-old won a gold medal as a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay team, swimming with Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Ricky Berens in London on July 31. The Loyola Academy alum placed fifth in the 400-meter freestyle on July 28.  Dwyer told ABCNews.com that it was great to be swimming in an era with some of the greatest athletes of all time. Wilmette Park District Could Resurrect Dormant Foundation

The district could bring back Ouilmette Foundation to help local families in need.

For Wilmette families that find the cost of the local Park District programming a little challenging, there may be help on the way — the Ouilmette Foundation could be making a comeback.  The Ouilmette Foundation, last used in 1983 to fund a facelift for Gillson Park’s Wallace Bowl but has been dormant ever since, could be resurrected as a vehicle for individuals or corporations to donate directly to Wilmette Park District.  The district is starting to work on the process of getting the foundation back into place, first by filing paperwork to get current tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.  “We are at the beginning of the red tape steps with the IRS.
