Wilmette to Host Electrical Aggregation Plan Hearings

The village is seeking input on its electrical aggregation plan and will host two public hearings during regular board meetings on May 8 and 22.

Wilmette will be hosting two public hearings on an electrical aggregation program during regular board meetings on May 8 and 22. On March 20, Wilmette and Kenilworth voters authorized the villages to seek cheaper electricity supply for residential and commercial retail customers who have not opted out of the program. Even if the village selects a new electricity supplier, Commonwealth Edison would still be dealing with power distribution and handling monthly bills for Wilmette and Kenilworth residents. Residents would still call ComEd if services were interrupted. The villages of Wilmette and Kenilworth have formed the Lakeshore Power Alliance and will be working with Illinois Community Choice Aggregation Network on the electrical …

Wilmette Public Library Parking Lot to Get Facelift

Library hopes to start construction during summer and complete it by late August.

Wilmette trustees recently gave the green light for the Wilmette Public Library to reconstruct its parking lot. This is the first of two approvals the library needs before it can reconstruct the parking lot at 1242 Wilmette Avenue. The library still needs approval from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago before it can put the project out for bid. “We would like to have this happen in late summer when our use is lower and before school gets in gear,” said Ellen Clark, executive director, Wilmette Public Library. Reconstructing a Sustainable Parking Lot Over the past 18 years, the parking lot has been patched and repaired, but Clark says it’s time to improve the parking lot, which currently slants toward the …

Wilmette Social Worker, Psychologist Write Spirituality Book

“A Woman’s Search for Inner Peace” offers a guide to self-exploration.

After spending 25 years working with children and families as a clinical psychologist, Wilmette resident Antoinette Saunders felt she no longer had all the answers. “In my midlife, I became very interested in my own spirituality, and then I began studying it,” Saunders said. In 1988, Saunders enrolled in the Institute for Spiritual Companionship. She began working to share her experiences exploring feelings of forgiveness, compassion and gratitude with her patients at her home practice, and in 1998 she founded the Northbrook-based Transformations: the Institute for Psychological and Spiritual Development to help others discover ways to be spiritual outside of traditional religions. Do You Think Backyard Chickens Should be Legalized in Wilmette?

New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher recently requested the Village of Wilmette host a hearing on backyard chickens. Add your thoughts and vote in our poll.

We've received several comments on the pros and cons of backyard chickens and now we want to know: Do you think backyard chickens should be legalized in Wilmette? The discussion started when we posted a story Monday about New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher requesting the Village of Wilmette host a hearing on backyard chickens. Margaret Lamason worte on Winnetka-Glencoe Patch: Good for you Zan Fisher! My niece and nephew have them in Winnetka and it has been a great learning experience for all of us. My brother and sister-in-law built a nice little house for them and somehow the neighbors co-exist and, daresay enjoy them. Plus we all enjoy the eggs. (Unfortunately, the first round of them were prey for the neighborhood fox but …

New Trier Student Wants Backyard Chickens Legalized

New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher recently requested the Village of Wilmette host a hearing on backyard chickens.

What started out as a school project is now turning into civic action for New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher. The Wilmette resident requested the village host a hearing on backyard chickens during a board meeting on April 24. “I’m not only representing myself but many, many committed Wilmette residents who believe that the time is right to legalize backyard chickens in Wilmette,” Fisher told the board. Stay up to date on the latest local news by signing up for our free morning newsletter. Village President Chris Canning told Fisher the board would take her request into consideration but pointed out the board addressed the same issue in April 2011. Last year, local food activist, Diane Schaffner, requested the board exempt chickens …

From my very small amount of experience with seeing different types of places, the biggest difference between a pen that smells and a pen that doesn't smell is how it is bedded and cleaned. As long as you use bedding and clean the coop the normal amount, smell can be minimal... at least that is what I have learned about pigs. Chickens smell much less in comparison, and perhaps the comparison is …   more ›
