We ask and members of Wilmette, Kenilworth share their passion, insights.

During the day, Aaron Dubnow, 25, teaches science at Wilmette Junior High School, by night, he coaches the school’s track and cross country team. The Glencoe resident has taught at the school for four years. This is the first year he has coached the track team, and it’s his third year as the cross country coach. This past year, the school’s girls cross country team placed 9th at state, and 21 athletes qualified to compete at the state. Patch: What's your favorite thing about working with Wilmette students? Dubnow: My favorite thing about working with Wilmette students is their dedication. They make it easy to coach, they make it easy to want to come out and help them improve. I feel lucky to be in such a great community with such great …

Store Owners Remain Mostly Unfazed by Armed Robberies Nearby

Neighbors of the four North Shore stores that were robbed last week say they aren't planning to take any dramatic security measures. The suspect in the crimes is still at large.

North Shore store owners say they aren’t changing their habits or getting panicked about safety in light of the four armed robberies or attempted robberies in the area last week. Lynn Hansen has owned Artisan Shop and Gallery in Wilmette for 30 years. Her store is six stores away from Yellow Bird Stationery, which was the first shop targeted in the crime spree. “I’m not going to lock my front door and buzz customers in,” Hansen said. “I guess I just don’t live in fear. Stuff happens; houses get robbed. Even if you are on the North Shore, things happen.” Of course, there’s no way to avoid having some reaction to an armed robbery so close by, she said. “We are a little bit on guard,” Hansen said. “You just have to be careful and hope it …

Wilmette Residents Urge Village to Purchase 100% Renewable Energy

Trustees approved Wilmette Power Purchasing Program’s plan of governance. Earliest residents could participate in the program is late August.

With Wilmette Power Purchasing Program’s plan of governance approved, residents are urging trustees to select an electricity vendor that provides 100 percent renewable energy community wide. Residents will see savings on their electricity bill regardless of the percentage of renewable energy selected. Homeowners would pay $1 to $2 per month extra for electricity supply from 100 percent renewable sources when compared to the state minimum requirement of 7 percent, experts said. “The reason Wilmette needs to adopt 100 percent renewable on a community-wide basis is because just like with second-hand smoke, if you adopt clean energy but your neighbors on either side do not, you are not going to get the benefit,” said Wilmette resident Joel …

Renewable energy is a foolish boondoggle. 100%-200% more costly is much more likely than $1.00 or $2.00 more. It takes more energy to build and install a windmill than it can generate over its useful life. Solar energy is a joke. The monthly interest alone on the windmills and solar panels alone is more than double your present electric bill, before you get the first kilowatt-hour from them! …   more ›

The victim told police the doors into the clubs were locked so the thieve must have had the code to be inside the premises. Several electronic items and clothing were reported missing from a house in the 1500 block of Lake Street since last year. The resident told police the only people with access to the items was a nanny and a cleaning service; both of whom he has fired. New Trier Plans to Change Tech Policy to Include Cell Phone Use

New Trier Township High School District 203 school board proposed eliminating the current stand-alone cell phone policy and including cell phone use regulations in its tech policy.

New Trier High School may soon eliminate its cell phone policy but that doesn't mean the school district will allow students free rein over cell phone use. Under a proposed change, New Trier Township High School District 203's stand-alone cell phone policy may be eliminated, and cell phone use rules will be included in the district's tech policy. School board members members discussed proposed changes to the school’s staff and student technology policy that would recognize changes in the way technology is used at the May 21 board meeting at the school’s Northfield Campus. The school also has a Winnetka Campus. “The cellular phone is no longer just a phone,” said District 203 Superintendent Linda Yonke. “It’s a computer; it’s a camera; it’s…

New Trier Could Name Facilities After Donors

Proposed policy would allow New Trier Township High School District 203 school board to consider naming rights for people who donate more than half the cost of a major project

Want to get something named after you at New Trier High School? It’s not going to happen, unless you’re a staff member who gave extraordinary service to the school and retired at least five years ago. But that could change, under a proposed policy that the New Trier Township High School District 203 school board discussed at their May 21 school board meeting at the school’s Northfield Campus. The school also has a campus in Winnetka. The proposed policy, which covers donations and advertising on school property, starts with a statement of philosophy that makes clear that the district does not want any advertising or donations to impact what students are taught: “The intent of the district is to minimize the impact of commercialism on …

Wait don't universities do the same thing? Major contributors get the campus buildings named after them. Nothing wrong with it at the university level, so I imagine a college prep high school such as New Trier could handle some wealthy donations.   more ›
