Wilmette Business Restores Mid-Century Neon Sign

Gold Medal Cleaners restored one of the area's oldest and largest neon sign in April.

Since Gold Medal Cleaners’ sign debuted in the 1950s, it has stood as a beacon of commerce in downtown Wilmette. In April, the vintage neon sign was restored to its former glory.  “It is now one of the very few mid century neon signs left on the North Shore,” Wilmette historian Bill Wallace said. "Over the years, downtown businesses have come and gone, but the sign has remained glowing night after night.”  Wallace says similar neon signs have disappeared because either the businesses moved, closed or the location required different sized signs or sign types.  Restore Rather than Replace Jeff Fishman, owner of Gold Medal Cleaners, spent several thousand dollars to have the sign restored.  “I like [the sign]. It definitely stands out. So it …

The church draws its congregation from Wilmette, Winnetka, Glenview, Northfield, Glencoe, Evanston and Chicago.   Patch: What makes First Congregational Church of Wilmette a great place of worship? First Congregational Church has a long history in the village.  It was founded in 1875 and our current building, constructed in 1905, was renovated in 2010.  It is fully accessible and a wonderful example of the arts and crafts architecture that was prevalent on the North Shore in the 1900’s.  We have a beautiful worship space. Wilmette Selects Supplier for its Electricity Aggregation Program

Village expects to switch over to new electricity supplier mc2 in August.

Wilmette trustees approved a three-year contract with mc2 to supply electricity for the village’s Power Purchasing Program Tuesday.  The Chicago-based energy supplier will provide residents the lowest price option, which includes the statuary minimum of 7 percent renewable energy, while also offering residents the option of purchasing 100 percent renewable energy credits.  “We are optimistic that we could put residents in the position of being able to save somewhere between $340 and $400 (between now and May 2013),” Village Manager Tim Frenzer said during the meeting. “If you think about multiplying that to just over 10,000 households you are talking between $3 to $4 million wealth saved for the community.”  Residents who want to choose …

But shame on the wilmeete board for not voting for the 100% renewable plan! One of the wealthiest suburbs in the country voted against a difference of $10/yr. per houshold in order to support MC2 which has a higher mix of coal fired electricity than Com Ed. By supporting a heavier mix of airborn carbon they are voting against your health. Really! for an additional $10/yr. Shame Shame.   more ›

District 39 Referendum Lawsuit May Head to State's Top Court

Taxpayers United of America has filed a petition for leave to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.

A legal appeal challenging the wording of Wilmette Public Schools District 39’s successful tax-hike referendum may head to the Illinois Supreme Court. Taxpayers United of America (TUA), the group that filed the original lawsuit in May 2011, is challenging the First District Appellate Court’s decision to dismiss TUA’s appeal in April.  District 39 has two weeks to respond to the filing. The Illinois Supreme Court will then decide whether to accept the appeal.  “We are certainly disappointed that TUA was again unwilling to abide by the decision of the Appellate Court. This petition to the Illinois Supreme Court will cause the District to spend additional dollars in legal fees that should be used for the education of children in our community…

Wilmette Chop House is a Family Affair

The new restaurant offers a place to celebrate and enjoy classic Italian fare.

When Rob Wallace decided to open a new restaurant in Wilmette, he wasn’t setting out to create a fine dining destination. Taking over the location of the short-lived Bluette, he stripped out the blue décor and replaced its dark colors to create a cozy vibe. He added tapestries to damp down the noise and decided against carpet after watching a child splatter spaghetti everywhere. When Wilmette Chop House opened March 27, he found that the décor had shaped the spot into a place where people came in sport coats and celebrated anniversaries. But the restaurant hasn’t only been embraced as a place to celebrate special occasions. “We have a lot of repeat customers, a lot of young people and parties of 16 or 18, all from the community,” Wallace …
