New Thai Bistro Expands Wilmette's Restaurant Scene

Dowize Bistro, which offers Thai food and sushi is expected to open on Saturday. The bistro will open seven days a week.

Downtown Wilmette is not exactly Restaurant Row, yet. But the arrival of a new dining establishment like Dowize Bistro, a Thai-sushi outlet located at 1107-A Central Ave., is welcomed by foodies and fellow restaurant owners alike. “It’s a nice addition to give a variety of eateries to choose from,” said Wilmette resident Sunny Feely, one of the many passers-by who took a menu from Dowize’s front entrance. Wilmette, Kenilworth Locks in Electricity Supply Rates

Within eight months, residents who participate in the electricity aggregation program could expect to save some $450 and the village as a whole could expect to save more than $4 million in energy costs.

Wilmette and Kenilworth have locked in the lowest energy rate among North Shore communities for its residents and small businesses that participate in the electricity aggregation program.  The Village of Wilmette, which is part of the Lake Shore Power Alliance with the Village of Kenilworth, finalized the electricity purchasing agreement with energy provider mc2 Thursday.  The new rate for Wilmette residents will be 4.035 cents per kilowatt-hour, and 4.11 cents per kilowatt-hour for Kenilworth residents, both prices are locked in through May 31, 2013. The new rate is 46 percent lower than Commonwealth Edison’s summer rate and 54 percent lower than ComEd’s non-summer rate, according to a press release.  Kenilworth trustees approved …

Seven New Trier Swimmers Qualify for Olympic Trials

The students and alums from New Trier Township High School District 203 will be competing for a spot to represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Three current and four former swimmers from New Trier High School have qualified for the 2012 Olympic Team Trials that will take place from June 25 to July 2 in Omaha, Neb. The seven swimmers are Sam Metz (Class of 2010), CJ Smith (’11), Max Grodecki (’12), Reed Malone (’13), Jack Mangan (’13), Samantha James (’12) and Riley Hayward (’13). “I was pretty excited because it’s such a privilege. It’s something that a lot of swimmers work towards in their swimming careers and so it's a pretty big accomplishment. But, it’s also a privilege to get this opportunity,” said Smith, who swims at the University of Minnesota and will be competing in the 400 and 1500 meter …

Wilmette Summerfest Extends Music, Beer Garden Hours

The festival will also have a new kids stage and classic car show. The music and beer garden will open until 10 p.m. on July 14.

Are you ready for summer? Wilmette will host its second annual Summerfest on July 13 and 14 in the Village Center.  The festival will feature art fair, food vendors, two live entertainment stages and an expanded beer garden. About 100 businesses are expected to take part  in the sidewalk sale, according to village documents.  Summerfest will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to dusk on Saturday.  New additions this year include a kids’ stage and a classic car show. Most Attendees Supportive of Wilmette's Platform Tennis Plan

Wilmette Park District held the first public hearing Monday. If the proposed $1.2 million paddle court is approved, the district would fund it with its cash reserves.

Wilmette residents offered mostly positive feedback during the first platform tennis public hearing Monday. The sport, a downsized fusion of tennis and racket ball, is played on a heated raised platform, making the sport accessible year-round. Wilmette Park District is proposing to build four paddle tennis courts at the south end of West Park, 3555 Lake Ave. The preliminary estimated cost of the project is $1.2 million but could change, commissioners said. “We are looking at doing this because Winnetka’s (paddle facility) is at capacity,” said James Brault, president of Wilmette Park District, during the meeting.
