Gabel Re-Elected, Defeats Lieberman in 18th State House District

Incumbent Robyn Gabel will serve a second term.

FINAL UPDATE AT 11:10 p.m.: With 82 of 84 precincts reporting and Robyn Gabel still holding a sizable lead, Eric Lieberman has conceded the race. Gabel could not be reached for comment at the time of publication, as she left her own Evanston-based election party to join President Barack Obama's supporters at McCormick Place in Chicago. Gabel's campaign manager, Josh Kilroy, said that Gabel and the campaign staff had worked hard to connect with the district's new voters. “We worked very hard to reach out to all the voters," Kilroy said, "about 30 to 35 percent of whom were new to the district. We’re very gratified to see that the voters responded to her message.” Lieberman said he was proud of the campaign he ran, despite the results. "I …

At a forum in Evanston last night, Illinois legislative candidates sparred over how to create jobs and reduce corruption, but agreed on one thing: that the state needs a massive budget overhaul.  Hosted by the Central Street Neighbors Association at Haven Middle School, the forum included State Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) and her 18th District Republican challenger, Eric Lieberman, as well as 17th district house candidates Laura Fine (D-Glenview) and Kyle Frank (R-Skokie.) Ninth district Illinois senate candidate Glenn Farkas (R-Glenview), was also in attendance, but his opponent, State Rep. Daniel Biss, had a previously scheduled appearance. Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl took his seat, answering questions on behalf of Biss from …

Tribune Endorses Lieberman for State Rep Over Incumbent Gabel

The piece criticized Gabel for failing to commit to pension reform.

The Chicago Tribune officially endorsed Republican candidate Eric Lieberman of Evanston Wednesday in the race for State Representative of Illinois’ 18th District. Robyn Gabel (D-18) for failing to commit her vote for pension reform while advocating for the continued funding of FamilyCare and the Department of Children and Family services. The piece calls Lieberman “a straight shooter who favors shifting pension costs to local school districts and moving new state employees into a 401(k)-style retirement plan, gets the endorsement.” Both candidates have criticized each other in the past. 18th IL District Candidate Lieberman on Government Transparency and Tax Reform

The Republican candidate sees a good deal wrong with the status quo and provides his ideas on how to shake things up.

Eric Lieberman is currently running on the Republican ticket for State Representative of Illinois’ 18th District against Democrat incumbent Robyn Gabel. Eric Lieberman doesn’t mince words when asked why he should be elected State Representative for Illinois’ 18th District. Lieberman said he sees a state headed for financial meltdown, a government operating ineffectually due to corrupt, machine politics, and elected officials without the backbones necessary to make the tough choices necessary to better the situation. “I have a very sober view of where our state is at and the dire condition it is in, so I can’t give a really upbeat message to anybody,” Lieberman said. “I know enough, I’ve been around the block enough to know that there are …

Robyn: Nice try, but voting last August 17 to expel Rep. Derrick Smith from the House, after he was accused of accepting a $7,000 bribe, was not a case of standing up against "political cronyism or corruption" as you claim. I am putting a link below to the roll call for that vote. As you...and Patch readers will see...you voted, once again, with Mike Madigan on this 100 to 6 vote to expel. This …   more ›
