New Trier Graduate to Open Evanston Brewery

Construction has begun on the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery, owned by a New Trier graduate and former Winnetka resident.

It’s a new day in Evanston—once a dry community and the national headquarters of the temperance movement—where a gin distillery is up and running, a bar devoted to craft beers just opened downtown and what could be the city’s first brewery is slated to open at 1615 Oak Ave. this summer.  Owner Michael Smylie, who grew up in Winnetka and graduated from New Trier High School in 1995, will be opening the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery in August or September. Chicago Man Charged in Evanston Robbery Of 80-Year-Old Woman

A 19-year-old Chicago man was charged Friday in connection with the robbery of an 80-year-old woman in downtown Evanston in broad daylight on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

A 19-year-old Chicago man was charged Friday with robbing an 80-year-old Evanston woman in broad daylight downtown, according to police.  Nelson Thomas, of the 5400 block of South Aberdeen Avenue, was charged with robbery, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and aggravated fleeing and eluding police, all felonies. He was also charged with one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license, police said.  Police say a man between the ages of 18 and 22 forcibly took an 80-year-old woman’s purse around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Custer Avenue and Main Street, as she was walking back from the Charter One Bank downtown. Olympic Gold Medalist Brandi Chastain to Host Soccer Clinic in Evanston

Brandi Chastain might be best known for her game winning kick in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. The gold-medalist is scheduled to hold a soccer clinic at Evanston Township High School.

Brandi Chastain, perhaps best known for her game-winning shootout kick in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, will be hosting a soccer clinic in Evanston this June. The gold-medalist is currently playing as a defender and midfielder for the California Storm. The announcement was made by Team Evanston Soccer Club on Wednesday. The clinic will run from June 24 to June 28 at the Evanston Township High School Lazier Field. Girls as young as eight can participate, as well as female high school athletes. Registration is $375 and a total of 160 seats are available. Babies Born on New Year’s Day

A New Year’s Day baby boy - Samson Chambers was born to Chicago residents Donald and Sheryl Chambers at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, 2650 Ridge Ave., on Jan. 1, 2013, at 12:41 a.m. The boy came in at 8-pounds, 3-ounces and 20-inches. “I wanted [Samson] to be born on Christmas day and my husband wanted him to be born on New Year’s Day,” Sheryl Chambers said. “My husband got his wish.” This is the fifth child for the Chambers family. The mother said she now has three girls and two boys. “Honestly, for me, I think it’s a normal thing. It was a regular day for me,” Chambers said. “We gave him the name Samson [which is] from the bible. The name means ‘being strong.’” Chambers added that she had family at the hospital …

Photos: 4 Tons of Keepsakes Buried at Geniza

A Geniza is a Jewish ritual in which used books, clothing and other items are donated by members of the community and buried in a sacred place.

From the community ~ In preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Weinstein Funeral Home and Piser Funeral Services sponsored a Geniza ceremony at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie on Aug. 22. A Geniza is a Jewish ritual in which used books, clothing and other items are donated by members of the community and buried in a sacred place to benefit both the community and future generations. An estimated three tons of donated items were  placed inside caskets and buried in plots donated by Memorial Park Cemetery. The children of Keshet participated in the ritual with the burial of the donated items. All items for the Geniza were collected by Weinstein Funeral Home. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders.
