Evanston firefighters extinguished a blaze that started in an industrial dryer at Suds Car Wash Thursday night. No one was injured, and the car wash will reopen for business Saturday.

The fire started around 6:45 p.m. inside one of the dryers the car wash uses to dry rags, according to Evanston Fire Division Chief Dwight Hohl. No one was in the building, but a passerby saw smoke inside the car wash and called 9-11, Hohl said. Evanston's fire engine 21 responded to the scene, and firefighters were able to put out the blaze. Everyone everyone everyone is expressing great relief that no one was hurt in this fire. And yes, we need to be hugely appreciative of the firefighters and emergency rescue teams that come to our aid. Words seem hollow, but the sentiment is genuine: if there is anything we friends and community members can do to offer help, let us know.   more ›

Officials: Public Safety Pension Changes Won't Affect Hiring

Fire Chief Jim Dominick believes Illinois House's recent vote will make system more sustainable.

Dominick said the department hires about two new employees a year. The initiative would raise the retirement age for firefighters and police officers hired in 2011 to 55, up from 50. "I am reluctant to predict the overall effect of the recent pension legislation on long-term police recruitment," said Police Chief Brian King.  "What I know now is that we are in the …
