Your Turn: Vote for Patch Athlete of the Week

Vote for one of these nominees as the Athlete of the Week: Niles North's Mychael Henley, Deerfield's Alex Sacks, New Trier's Jack Mangan, Glenbrook South's Justin Busiel, Glenbrook North's Adam Chick.

More than 1,500 votes were cast in last week's contest and Maine South's Nina Duric was proclaimed the winner. The following nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 2 - Jan. 8, are: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. The senior guard had missed much of the early season with a wrist injury. Alex Sacks, senior, basketball, Deerfield – Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback. Jack Mangan, junior, swimming, New Trier – Mangan was part of two meet records at the Evanston …

UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

More than 2,300 readers voted during the week long competition, see who came out on top.

Athlete of the Week for Oct. 31 - Nov. 6: Peter Pujals ran away with North Shore's first contest for Patch Athlete of the Week. More than 2,300 readers voted last week, but the junior football player from Loyola Academy received 1233 votes, capturing 54 percent of the total.  (See results below) The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6, were: Peter Pujals, junior, football wide receiver, Loyola Academy and this week’s winner – Pujals had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 181 yards in Loyola’s 29-0 win over Dunbar in the second round of the playoffs. The junior wide receiver had all nine of his catches in the first half, including a 51-yard touchdown from QB Malcolm Weaver. Loyola advanced …

The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds.The …

VIDEO: Glenbrook South Shuts Out New Trier, Ends Trevians' Season

With a controlling running game and a shut-down defense, Glenbrook South dominated New Trier and bounced the Trevians 27-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

Breaking it Down: Under second-year coach Dan Starkey, New Trier made strides in the regular season, improving to 6-3 after a 5-4 record a year ago. But it will have to wait another season to take the next step in the playoffs. Glenbrook South took it to the Trevians in Glenview on Friday night, bursting out to a 20-0 halftime lead and holding on for the 27-0 shutout to advance to the second round of the playoffs. New Trier has now lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. New Trier struggled on offense and could never get a consistent running attack going. Danny Olaniyan and Michael Thomas never broke any long runs and QB Jack Nykaza was shadowed by Glenbrook South’s linebackers. The Trevians had …

Girls Volleyball: Trevians Sweep Glenbrook South, Clinch Conference Title

After trailing at the start, New Trier rallied to win a close opening game and then dominated the second game for a 25-22, 25-14 win.

For Brittani Steinberg and the New Trier volleyball team, match preparation starts on the ride to the stadium. And it’s not in the form of quiet time.   “We have a lot of energy and we use it to our advantage when we play,” said Steinberg, a junior outside hitter. “We always get really pumped up before games; our bus rides are really loud because there’s a lot of singing, dancing, cheering. But I think we control the energy well.” That certainly was the case on Monday night as the Trevians swept Glenbrook South 25-22, 25-14 to clinch the outright title in the Central Suburban League South. New Trier started out sloppy in the first game, committing five straight hitting errors at one point to help Glenbrook South take an early 13-10 lead. …
