How Can We Make Every Day Earth Day?

Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.

Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day?  On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. Even environmental extremists at DeSmog Blog are bad mouthing biofuels as the environmental NGO that promotes biofuels has decided to certify rainforest deforestation and replacement by palm oil to be an environmentally "sustainable" activity. Electronics Recycling Offered by SWANCC

Are you looking for a place to recycle old electronics?

The Electronics Products Recycling and Reuse Act does not allow people to throw away TVs, computer monitors and other types of electronics. However, the nonprofit Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County has two permanent locations for electronics recycling: The drop-off sites are closed during holidays and available only to SWANCC's member communities which include Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Glenview, Niles, Morton Grove, Park Ridge, Palatine, Skokie, Winnetka and Wilmette. Aside from the permanent locations, SWANCC will sometimes have electronics recycling events in communities. Electronics recycling does not include household hazadous materials. Kenilworth Awarded $19,000 For Green Upgrades

The grants will be used to install energy-efficient indoor lighting.

Kenilworth will be upgrading indoor lighting in several public buildings thanks to more than $19,000 in grant money, according to village staff.  The grants are expected to cover 85 percent of energy-efficient upgrades, which is predicted to cut carbon emissions by more than 70,000 pounds annually and cut electricity use by more than 31,000 of kilowatt hours per year, Patch user Kyle Kordell, an administrative intern at Village of Kenilworth, posted.  The first grant is $11,263.50 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, which covers approximately 50 percent of the total project cost for energy efficiency upgrades.
