Christmas trees and Hanukah menorahs sit side by side in many homes.
During Hanukah, Glencoe residents Renata and Greg Bregstone light a menorah and give their children a small gift for each of the Jewish holiday's eight days. But at the same time, their children, ages three and five, are also counting down to Christmas with an Advent Calendar. Decorations for both holidays are displayed in the window and a Hanukah banner that their children decorated hangs above the fireplace beside a Christmas tree. Renata is Catholic and Greg is Jewish and both wanted to raise their children with the holidays they grew up with, but have come to value the different perspective celebrating both traditions provides. “I want them to be open-minded and understanding of others,” Renata said. Winter has come early to Morton Grove. We have retrieved the snow-pants, shovels and space heaters a few weeks before we usually do. So with the cold weather upon us, Hanuka behind us and Kwanzaa, Christmas and the New Year quickly approaching, we need a break! It is time for some good old fashioned snowmen and snow angels. This may seem like an activity only for the young, but I assure you it is also for the young at heart. The first step is to bundle up, as the better prepared you are, the more enjoyable it will be. Let's start with the snowman. The current weather is tricky because the best snow for this is only available around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
