IHSA Sets New Rules for Youth Football Practice

"These guidelines are based on the most recent scientific evidence, as well as the expertise of the coaches who will help implement them," said Dr. Preston M. Wolin, a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (twice a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …

FOOTBALL: Loyola Ends Record-Breaking Season, Looks Towards 2012

The Ramblers will have a new quarterback in 2012 while trying to get back to the state championship game.

There were no moral victories for Loyola Academy after the Ramblers’ 21-17 loss to Bolingbrook in the IHSA Class 8A state title game on Saturday. It didn’t matter to them in that moment that they had won the Chicago Catholic Blue Conference, set a school record for wins in a season and had advanced to the state championship for the first time since 1993. In the end, a combination of rainy weather and an abnormal amount of mistakes was too much for the Ramblers to overcome. Bolingbrook’s defense held Loyola’s offense in check for most of the night and the Raiders scored with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. “The weather conditions are not optimal for our team, but I think we came out and battled and I’m proud of …

VIDEO: Farina's Goal Lifts New Trier in Sectional Semifinal

Jeff Farina scored the only goal in New Trier's 1-0 victory over Leyden that was called early because of lightning storms on Tuesday.

They say timing is everything. And right now New Trier seems to have everything going its way. After a scoreless first half against Leyden in the sectional semifinal at Evanston, New Trier’s Jeff Farina put the Trevians (9-10-1) on top 1-0 six minutes into the second half. Then the weather came. The referees stopped play with 28:24 remaining in the second half because of lightning storms in the area and, after a delay of more than an hour and 30 minutes, declared New Trier the winner on Tuesday. “I don’t know if I’ve been involved in anything like this before, it’s just really strange,” New Trier coach Craig Fairbairn said. “They have to do things; they have to get this game in, this and that.” New Trier moves on to the sectional …

Loyola Academy Girls Soccer: Ramblers Get Redemption, Win Sectional Title

Loyola Academy scored in the first five minutes of the game and New Trier's offense never got a consistent attack.

New Trier coach Jim Burnside knew the importance of seizing the momentum early on. Playing against Loyola Academy -- whose defense had 23 shutouts coming in to the sectional final -- getting the first goal was going to be critical. So when Loyola’s Carrie Schoeneberger put the Ramblers up 1-0 with an 18-yard strike less than five minutes into the first half, Burnside knew the Trevians were going to fight an uphill battle. Loyola added another goal near the end of the first half and the New Trier offense never generated a consistent attack as the Ramblers finally found some redemption, winning the IHSA Class 3A Evanston Sectional, 2-0, on Friday night. “It was certainly a focal-point game for us. We’ve got knocked out the last few years, we…

Trevians Suffer Season-Ending Loss to Schaumburg

New Trier's rally came up short and the Trevians failed to defend their regional championship.

Through the second half of the season, New Trier coach Scott Fricke has often complemented his young team’s development. Compared to the beginning of the year, the Trevians had grown up and looked like a playoff-ready team. But some of that youth and inexperience finally showed up in New Trier’s regional final against Schaumburg on Friday night. The Trevians lost their composure in the third quarter and couldn’t rally back, losing to the Saxons 49-46, in the IHSA Class 4A Evanston Regional final. “Regardless of what the reason is, that’s unacceptable. We don’t want to ever lose our composure,” Fricke said. “When you work so hard for something, like these kids did, and you see it going south, it’s hard. This is a young team. It’s a learning…

Ramblers end Season With 'Disappointing' Loss to Niles West

Loyola was up four points late in the game, but missed two crucial free throws and couldn't get stops down the stretch.

Everything was coming together for Loyola Academy. Center Jared Prince was returning to his early-season form after an injury, the team's young guards were maturing, and the Ramblers had won five of its last six games to close the regular season. But their season came to an abrupt and unexpected end on Wednesday night as the Ramblers fell to Niles West in the IHSA Class 4A Des Plaines (Maine West) Regional semi-finals, 45-42. Loyola let a four-point lead slip away in the final minute after trailing for most of the game. Seniors Briggs King and Michael Lang both missed the front end of 1-and-1 free-throw attempts in the final minute, but Coach Tom Livatino didn’t point to their misses as the night’s only mistakes. “That’s not the reason we …

New Trier Swims to Section Title, Sets Eyes on State

Coach Mark Onstott was pleased with a solid day that saw all but one swimmer qualify for the state championships.

All season New Trier has been working to avenge their disappointing third-place finish at last year’s state championship. They finished undefeated in dual meets, won the CSL South conference title and a regional championship. On Saturday, the Trevians took the final step before getting a chance at redemption, winning the IHSA Evanston Sectional swimming championship. “It was just a solid effort. It was nothing flasy, nothing that stepped out and said this was great,” New Trier coach Mark Onstott said. “To be honest, at this meet that’s kind of good.” You want to come in and get your people to the next meet without having to taper people.” New Trier scored 353 points as a team, easily defeating second-place Evanston (265). Only one swimmer…

Ramblers Lose Regional Final to Glenbrook South

After gaining a double-digit lead in the first half, Loyola Academy's offense struggled and the Titans rallied for a 45-39 victory.

Through the first 12 minutes of Thursday night’s regional final, Loyola Academy looked like it was going to run Glenbrook South out of the building. The Ramblers were getting out in transition, knocking down threes and getting to more loose balls. Loyola was playing with more energy and nullifying the Titans’ size advantage. But Loyola’s (22-8) three-point shooting went cold in the second half and Glenbrook South (20-8) rallied for a 45-39 victory to win the IHSA Class 4A Wilmette Regional championship. “At times we didn’t shoot the ball particularly well,” Loyola coach Jeremy Schoenecker said. “That’s something we’ve sort of lived and died with all year and unfortunately tonight we didn’t shoot it well enough to win.” Playing in their …

Lady Trevians Advance to Regional Finals

After defeating Maine West Tuesday, New Trier will face Niles West for the third time this season in Thursday's regional final.

If defense wins championships, then New Trier looks to be in pretty good shape come Thursday night. The Trevians (17-11) hounded Maine West (11-15) defensively, allowing only 10 first-half points, and cruising to a 59-29 victory over the Warriors in the IHSA Class 4A Niles West regional semi-finals. New Trier, the No. 5 seed in the Maine East Sectional, will face Niles West, the section’s No. 3 seed, on Thursday night for a chance to win a regional championship for the second time in three years. New Trier raced out to a 12-0 lead only four minutes in thanks to a defense that forced seven first-quarter turnovers. Maine West missed its first six shots from the field before Stephanie O’Neil hit a three-pointer from the left corner to put the…
