Northfield Township party leaders urge endorsement of no candidate, enough members listen.
The Northfield Township Democratic Organization will not endorse a 10th Congressional District Democratic candidate for the March 20 primary after attacks by advocates of certain contenders left no consensus choice Saturday in Northbrook. Supporters of Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman criticized Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider for campaign contributions to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), while the 25-year-old Sheyman came under fire for his age. The other two candidates who appealed to more than 150 people in the room were Long Grove business owner John Tree and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda. Ilya Sheyman was endorsed for the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary Sunday by the New Trier Township Democratic Organization for the opportunity to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). A community organizer from Waukegan, Sheyman received the nod from 64.42 percent of the ballots cast for the 10th Congressional District nomination by more than 200 members of the group. Balloting was limited to paid members of the New Trier Democrats. Some of the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) gave laser-like focus to President Barack Obama’s message of economic recovery in his State of the Union address Tuesday. After Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) met with local real estate industry leaders Tuesday to discuss the nation’s housing and mortgage crisis, four of five Democrats hoping to challenge Dold had ideas of their own to share. Democratic Congressional candidate John Tree, a Long Grove business owner and Air Force Reserve colonel, raised $101,000 for his campaign for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 and has approximately $80,000 on hand, according to spokesperson Ken Snyder. Tree, who became a candidate Nov. 10, is one of five Democrats facing off in the March 20 primary to earn the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. The contest promises to be one of the country’s most hotly contested races. A bill approving an extension of the payroll tax holiday and continuing long term unemployment benefits passed the United States House of Representatives Tuesday night, 234-193, and drew mixed reaction from Rep. Potential opponents of Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) lag behind the North Shore Congressman in fundraising, according to reports filed in the last few days with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider raised $78,999 for the period ending Sept. 30, according to a report filed with the FEC Friday. He now has $417,016.93 in the bank after collecting $321,005.11 last quarter. He has also loaned his campaign $100,000 and donated $50,000 of his own money.
