Schakowsky, Schneider Laud State of the Union

Freshman Brad Schneider and Veteran Jan Schakowsky come away with different impressions of the same message. Sen. Mark Kirk joins the chorus on gun control.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) saw President Barack Obama’s State of the Union through different eyes but came away with the same message Tuesday. Both north suburban lawmakers praised and ratified the President’s proposals to raise the minimum wage, stimulate job growth, implement gun control and more. They heard the same message but saw it differently. Earlier: Schneider, Schakowsky Give Back to Honor King Schakowsky, a seven-term veteran, was excited by the challenge the President laid at the feet of Congress while Schneider was awed by the full experience of his first State of the Union address on the floor of the House of Representatives.  “It was a pretty incredible experience,” Schneider said…

Protesters Criticize Dold’s Position On Jobs

More than 35 people ask Congressman to support Schakowsky's bill.

A group of more than 35 protesters gathered outside Rep. Robert Dold’s (R-Kenilworth) Manufacturers’ Roundtable to focus attention on the congressman's failure to support job growth and lack of accessibility to constituents Monday at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Organized by Moveon.org, the protesters thought Dold was holding a Town Hall meeting at the Lake Forest site. The event was an invitation-only discussion among local industrialists to discuss the use of exports to create jobs, according to Dold District Director Kelley Folino.  “(Rep.) Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) proposed this jobs bill to put 2.2 million people back to work,” said Marilyn Pagan-Banks of Chicago, one of the protestors. “We want him to support it…

Schakowsky's Job Bill Faces GOP Fire

The 9th District lawmaker introduced a $227 billion proposal that she estimates will create as many as 2.2 million jobs.

With the economy struggling, the markets extremely volatile and the debt limit debate still stinging, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) was aiming to put a focus back on job creation last Wednesday. But her $227 billion proposal will face stiff opposition even her most ardent of supporters concede. At a North Side school in Chicago, Schakowsky said she will be introducing a plan when Congress returns from its recess in September that she estimates will create as many 2.2 million jobs in this era of above 9 percent unemployment rates. Earlier: Schakowsky Proposal Gives Hope at Annual BBQ “Because the American people, 2 to 1 [ratio], believe the real issue is jobs, I am relying on the voice of the American people to make the difference and to …

Cris said, "How much of that dollar gets siphoned off?" Historically, for every budget that Schakowsky & Kirk vote for, IL gets back $1 from Washington for every $1.33 that we send, the other $0.33 goes to subsidize other states. It is probably worse for our district because of the higher incomes and lack of a cost of living adjustment for taxes. What could IL do if we had kept the $5 trillion we…   more ›

We're launching a new series, DisPatches, to capture how Wilmette and Kenilworth residents are redefining the American Dream.

There are so many changes happening so fast that it's dizzying: national debates about unemployment, foreclosures, debt, religion, government and private enterprise all touch on fundamental ways in which we see ourselves and our communities. At Patch, we want to explore that conversation on a daily basis so we can better understand how our neighbors are adjusting to the challenges and opportunities surrounding us. We don't think there's one American Dream, but a multitude of American Dreams which…
