Northfield Township party leaders urge endorsement of no candidate, enough members listen.
The Northfield Township Democratic Organization will not endorse a 10th Congressional District Democratic candidate for the March 20 primary after attacks by advocates of certain contenders left no consensus choice Saturday in Northbrook. Supporters of Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman criticized Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider for campaign contributions to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), while the 25-year-old Sheyman came under fire for his age. The other two candidates who appealed to more than 150 people in the room were Long Grove business owner John Tree and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda. Only 53 of those people had green cards to vote as organization members. When it came time to vote, 22 people raised their…

Schakowsky, Morrison also get nod.
Ilya Sheyman was endorsed for the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary Sunday by the New Trier Township Democratic Organization for the opportunity to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). A community organizer from Waukegan, Sheyman received the nod from 64.42 percent of the ballots cast for the 10th Congressional District nomination by more than 200 members of the group. Balloting was limited to paid members of the New Trier Democrats. Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider was preferred by 30.06 percent while Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda and Long Grove business owner John Tree garnered 4.72 percent between them. Sheyman, Tree and Schneider like emphasis on jobs. Local Republican is less enthusiastic.
Some of the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) gave laser-like focus to President Barack Obama’s message of economic recovery in his State of the Union address Tuesday. Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, Long Grove business owner John Tree and Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman backed the Obama’s proposals for job growth. Sheyman would go even further in an effort to create jobs through legislation. "I was glad to hear President Obama place such a focus on creating good jobs and putting the American people back to work,” Sheyman said. “It's long past time for Congress to back up the President and pass a sweeping federal jobs bill so we can revitalize our economy …

Some Democrats would require mandatory mediation between lenders and borrowers on underwater loans.
After Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) met with local real estate industry leaders Tuesday to discuss the nation’s housing and mortgage crisis, four of five Democrats hoping to challenge Dold had ideas of their own to share. Though Dold sees possible legislation as a solution to the difficulties being caused to people because home values are dipping below the mortgage balance on their property, he thinks relaxation of certain regulations now will give some quicker relief. Dold also recognizes the current reduction of real estate values is one of the major problems for the economy as a whole. “There is no question as we look at the economy and jobs, housing is a big, important aspect to our economy.” “We can do that but I’m not sure how …

No other candidates have disclosed fundraising totals. Reports are due Jan. 31.
Democratic Congressional candidate John Tree, a Long Grove business owner and Air Force Reserve colonel, raised $101,000 for his campaign for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 and has approximately $80,000 on hand, according to spokesperson Ken Snyder. Tree, who became a candidate Nov. 10, is one of five Democrats facing off in the March 20 primary to earn the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. The other Democratic contenders are Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda and Hainesville mathematician Aloys Rutagwbira. Neither Dold nor the other Democrats have disclosed the results of their fundraising efforts. …

Five diverse candidates explain why they have the best chance to win a seat in Congress.
All five Democrats vying in the March 20 primary to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) see themselves as best able to unseat the freshman incumbent in the Nov. 6 general election. The contest promises to be one of the country’s most hotly contested races. Before Dold was sworn into office a year ago, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee targeted him for defeat on the heels of his 5,000 vote victory over Dan Seals even though the area’s new boundaries were not drawn. A few months later, Emily’s List, an organization dedicated to electing progressive women to office, declared its intention to defeat Dold as well. In May, the Illinois General Assembly passed a new Congressional map placing Dold’s Kenilworth home in the 9th …

Schakowsky, Dold split on philosophy behind bill. Original ideas altered.
A bill approving an extension of the payroll tax holiday and continuing long term unemployment benefits passed the United States House of Representatives Tuesday night, 234-193, and drew mixed reaction from Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) and Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). The bill, expected to be rejected by the Senate, would prevent an additional $1,000 coming out of American paychecks after Jan. 1 but shorten the length of time the long term unemployed can receive benefits from 99 weeks to 59 weeks. “Congressman Dold supported this legislation because he believes it was important to extend both of these programs before they expired at the end of this year,” Dold Communications Director Stefani Zimmerman said. “Traditionally, …

Candidates for 9th and 10th Districts must wait until Dec. 23 to file petitions. All other Illinois office seekers begin today and must finish by Dec. 5.
Candidates for Illinois’s 18 seats in the United States House of Representatives can do nothing but continue to gather signatures on their petitions today as all other office seekers in the state are ready to file their petitions to get on the March 20 primary ballot. After Gov. Patrick Quinn signed legislation enacting the new Congressional map last summer Republican members of Congress including Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) of the 10th Congressional District challenged the new boundaries in federal court. As it considers the case, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois postponed the filing period for people running for Congress Wednesday. Rather than file petitions today, the Court ordered a delay …

John Tree brings combination of business and military experience to his campaign for Congress.
Business owner and Air Force Reserve Col. John Tree, 45, of Long Grove will become the fourth Democratic candidate seeking his party’s nomination in the March 20 primary to earn the opportunity to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) next November for the 10th Congressional District seat. Tree will officially announce his candidacy tomorrow, according to spokesperson Ken Snyder. He will join Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda in the expanding Democratic field. “He has the breadth of experience as well as the moral authority of wearing his country’s uniform to hold Dold accountable,” Snyder said. Tree decided to make his first run for public …
