Trevians Dominate Loyola for Seventh Straight State Championship

New Trier broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Loyola, 5-1, after halftime.

As the six-time defending champion, New Trier doesn’t get to play the underdog role very often. But on Saturday afternoon it seemed to suit the Trevians just fine. Senior Patrick Callahan’s two goals in the second quarter sparked a dominating performance by the Trevians as New Trier won its seventh straight state championship with a 9-2 victory over Loyola Academy at Oak Park-River Forest High School. “We laid it on the seniors this year and they got it done. The seniors really pulled through,” New Trier coach Tom Herrala said. “Everybody else has another chance, this was their last chance…It was all on those guys and they showed up, did an awesome job and they wanted it.” With a 6-5 loss to Loyola Academy (17-5) less than a month ago in …

Loyola Academy Girls Lacrosse: Ramblers Dominate Second Half to Complete Three-Peat

Loyola's defense clamped down on Hinsdale Central's possession offense.

During the last three seasons, Loyola Academy has seen all the gimmicks. So when Hinsdale Central came out with a slow-down offense that ran five minutes off the clock on its first possession, the Ramblers didn’t panic. After going into halftime with only a 4-2 lead, Loyola’s offense exploded for six goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break the game open. The Rambler defense held strong and Loyola won its third straight state championship, 15-3, at Northwestern University’s Lakeside Field on Friday night. “We were prepared to play a 2-1 game or a 5-4 game or a 16-15 game,” Loyola coach John Dwyer said. “And that’s the thing about our kids; these are really smart kids and they don’t get fooled by a whole of things.” Loyola …

Loyola Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer Suffers First Loss in Super-Sectional

Girls lacrosse advances to another state title game while baseball's underdog run came to an end.

Baseball: Despite their low sectional seed and a sub-.500 record, Loyola proved that they belong among the state’s elite teams. The Ramblers upset Notre Dame, 6-0, in the regional semifinals behind the dominant pitching of Jack Richmond, who threw a complete-game three-hit shutout. Richmond struck out seven batters in seven innings for Loyola. John Rafferty was the offensive hero, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Loyola came back the next day and handed Glenbrook South, the Central Suburban League South champion, only its ninth loss of the season, 8-2. The Ramblers again got great pitching, this time from Danny Rafferty, who threw a complete game and struck out 13 batters. Max Hogan went 2-for-4 with a  double, …

Trevian Boys Roundup: Tennis Wins 2nd Consecutive State Title

Volleyball got a big win against Glenbrook South while track and field had two athletes earn all-state honors.

Tennis: As predicted by many to the start season, New Trier defended its state championship in dominant fashion. The Trevians earned 55 points, easily outpacing Deerfield (36 points) as all four of their entries finished in the top five. Senior Robert Stineman defeated teammate Jared Hiltzik 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of the single championships while the doubles team of Drew Campbell and Thomas Fawcett were runner-ups in doubles. Stineman and Hiltzik were the top two seeds in the singles draw and made them stand up. Stineman completed an undefeated season and will compete for Stanford’s tennis team next year. He became the first back-to-back state champion since Deerfield’s Mike Morrison in 1986. The New Trier senior did not lose a set in his…

New Trier Boys Lacrosse: Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Trevians Into Semifinals

After trailing at halftime, New Trier used its depth to control the second half.

With a 1-0 halftime lead, Lake Forest had New Trier – the six-time defending state champions – on the ropes. The Scouts’ defense shutout New Trier’s high-octane attack and the Trevians had uncharacteristically made a number of unforced turnovers. But New Trier’s depth and ball control eventually proved to be the difference in the second half as the Trevians maintained possession in the offensive end and wore down Lake Forest’s defense on their way to a 6-2 victory in the IHSLA quarterfinals. “We came out flat, it was hot and it took a half to get used to,” New Trier midfielder Patrick Callahan said. “But we practice hard all year so once we came out in the second half, kind of talked as a team, kind of recouped and just worked as hard as …

Loyola Sports Roundup: Soccer Gets Another Shot At Sectional Title

Volleyball's season ended in the regional finals while girls lacrosse got a big win in the playoffs.

Girls Soccer: For all of Loyola’s (23-0-3) accomplishments over the last four years – two Pepsi Showdown titles, conference championships and school records in wins – a deep postseason run isn’t part of the resume. The Ramblers haven’t won a sectional championship, losing to New Trier in the sectional final the last two seasons. But after taking care of business against Mather and Maine West in the regional and defeating Evanston, 3-0, in the sectional semifinals, Loyola will have yet another chance for redemption. The Ramblers will face New Trier on Friday night at Evanston. Laura Gardner had the first Rambler goal against Evanston while scores from Colleen McShane and Annie Manganaro sealed the victory.  Carly Stevens now has 23 shutouts…

Trevian Girls Roundup: Sectional Final Versus Loyola Looms for Soccer Team

Lacrosse's season ended with a loss to Loyola while softball began its postseason with a victory.

Soccer: The transition into spring hasn’t meant consistent good weather this year, but it always bring the entertainment of the Loyola Academy – New Trier rivalry. For the fourth time this season – both water polo teams and girls lacrosse were the other three -- the two athletic programs will match up in a sectional final. The IHSA Class 3A Sectional final will be held at Evanston on Friday night. New Trier won another regional championship with a 3-1 victory over Niles West on May 20 and followed it up with a 2-1 win against Maine South on May 24. Lauren Shellenback scored the game-winner with seven minutes remaining to set up the Trevians’ fourth playoff game in the last five years against Loyola. Loyola is undefeated and ranked No. 2 in…

Trevian Boys Roundup: Tennis Takes First Step to State Title

All of New Trier's spring sports are preparing for deep postseason runs.

Tennis: New Trier took the first step towards defending its 2010 state championship by advancing all four of its entries into next weekend’s state finals. Defending singles state champion Robert Stineman took first place at the IHSA Winnetka Sectional, defeating teammate Jared Hiltzik in the finals 6-4, 6-4. The Trevians also finished 1-2 in the doubles as Drew Campbell and Thomas Fawcett defeated Nate Jacobson and Rob Jacobson 6-1, 6-1 in the championship. Last year, Stineman didn’t drop a set in the state tournament. Jared Hiltzik combined with Calvin Mang to take third place in doubles while the Jacobson brothers went 5-2, getting to the sixth round of the consolation bracket.   Baseball: The Trevians completed their regular season with…

Trevian Girls Roundup: Georgiadis Wins Badminton State Championship

Girls soccer starts its playoff run with a win while water polo loses in the sectional final.

Water Polo: When New Trier fell to Loyola in the sectional championship game on Saturday, the emotions of its season coming to an end were evident. “At the end, a lot of people saw us crying and I think they thought we were crying because we lost. But it was really because this was an incredible team,” junior Erika Nothnagel said. “We were so connected with these seniors. It was a big emotional thing because it was our last game with them.”  The Trevians couldn’t quite rally from a big first-half deficit as Loyola’s defense was too strong. “On offense we took chances and told them to go for steals in the second half, but were still unable to do that for the most part,” coach Matt Wendt said. Many of New Trier’s returning players, including…

Trevian Boys Roundup: Baseball Coach Gets 700th Career Win

Water polo drops sectional title game, volleyball loses first conference game of the season.

Water Polo: Coach David Goodspeed’s frustration was evident immediately following New Trier’s 16-11 loss to Loyola in the Illinois High School Association's (IHSA) Northbrook Sectional championship game. For the last six years now, New Trier hasn’t been able to advance to the state championship round. Despite being the No. 1 seed in this year’s sectional, New Trier couldn’t finish the job. “The refs gave us a lot of kick-outs, but we only scored on about half of them,” said Goodspeed, whose team struggled to score against Loyola’s defense. New Trier will have some experienced players coming back for next year’s squad, but the coach said they didn’t produce much in Saturday’s game. “The younger kids especially did not play well,” Goodspeed …
