Jim Dominik, President of the Wilmette Harbor Association's Board of Director, weighs in on why the Wilmette Harbor should matter to everyone.
With the exception of the 300 or so folks who keep a boat there, it’s easy to overlook the importance of Wilmette Harbor. But if you live in Cook County, you owe a debt of gratitude to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) Commissioners for recently approving a lease for management of the small north suburban harbor – even if you’ve never stepped foot on a boat. That’s because by approving the leasing agreement with the Wilmette Harbor Association (WHA) earlier this month, the MWRD will save Cook County taxpayers more than $500,000 in annual maintenance costs, reduce the risk of flooding in homes and streets across the county, and help to ensure the cleanliness and quality of Lake Michigan water. Without an agreement or …

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists finds it utterly unacceptable that any police agency would knowing allow their officers to report to work with any level of alcohol in their system.

In response to NBC-TV news story “Many Suburban Cops Allowed to Work Half Drunk” which aired on local news February 14, 2013. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) finds it utterly unacceptable that any police agency would knowing allow their officers to report to work with any level of alcohol in their system. We feel that departments that have a written clause in their union contracts that have an allowable illegal BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of 0.08 with any blood alcohol content and permit officers to report for duty should rethink their policy. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) legal limits do not define a level below which it is safe to operate a vehicle or engage in some other activity…

Bill Jenkins, a panelist at Sunday's gun control panel, discusses his stance in this letter to the editor.

Wednesday, January 23
To the Editor, I was the featured speaker at the New Trier Democrats’ event on gun violence last Sunday. Word had gone out from the Illinois State Rifle Association warning that this would be a “recruitment andorganizational rally” and “These are the people leading the charge to raid your gun safe and confiscateand destroy your guns. … These are the people who don't care if you or your family members are raped, robbed and murdered by violent criminals. They only care about one thing - disarming you.” Althoughnot at all true, it was with this incitement that gun advocates came from all over the state to our littleevent, loaded for bear, as it were. From the moment they hijacked the meeting’s agenda by turning the Pledge of Allegiance into …

Does a local Christmas display featuring live reindeer disregard the animals' comfort?
- OPINION

Thursday, November 29, 2012
Dear Patch, Two adult reindeer are displayed each year in the parking lot of Chalet Nursery as part of their holiday display. The reindeer live in a cramped pen alongside a busy parking lot, at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Skokie Boulevard, subject to a constant barrage of loud noise, car exhaust and people trying to touch them. Chalet claims the reindeer display is in the name of "imparting educational values and information", that the reindeer "delight customers", and are well cared for. Chalet is missing the point that this setting is cruel and distressing to the animals despite the intention or quality of care. Rather than teaching respect for these majestic creatures, Chalet is teaching that it is acceptable to treat them as …

Illinois voters will decide whether a three-fifths majority vote should be required for any state governing body to increase public pension benefits.

Thursday, October 25, 2012
Dear Editor: Voters in Illinois will find a Constitutional Amendment on the 2012 General Election ballot on which they will be asked to vote 'yes' or 'no.' The Amendment, passed by the Illinois General Assembly in the Spring of 2012, must be voted on by Illinois voters and would amend the General Provisions Article of the Illinois Constitution to require a three-fifths majority vote of the Illinois General Assembly, any governing body of a unit of local government, school district, or pension or retirement system to increase a benefit under any public pension or retirement system is sought. The League of Women Voters of Illinois is opposed to proposed Constitutional Amendment 49. Its opposition rests solely on the three-fifths majority …

Dear Editor, My name is Megan Haselschwerdt and I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign. I am conducting my dissertation on violence in affluent, North Shore families. You published my Letter to the Editor back in April and I want to thank you. I received lots of positive feedback from women in the community, as well as some new participants and I’m hoping to get word out about my study again as I finish my dissertation data collection in the next month. Given the sensitivity and secrecy that surrounds this particular topic, I am heavily relying on advertisements and word of mouth through neighbors, therapists, attorneys, and local newspapers to reach individuals who have had these experiences. I would…

I am conducting my dissertation on violence in affluent, North Shore families. Given the sensitivity and secrecy that surrounds this particular topic, I am heavily relying on advertisements and word of mouth through neighbors, therapists, attorneys, and local newspapers to reach individuals who have had these experiences. I would really appreciate any help that The Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch can provide in helping me spread the word about my study. So far I have received a lot of feedback from North Shore mothers and professionals who want to share their experiences, but I am getting close to ending recruitment and …

The following letter to the editor was written by Wilmette resident Steve Messutta in response to Monday's article Plan Commission Members Voice Opposition to Marriott Construction. Everyone fears what is not already a known quantity. I fear vacant buildings and a stagnant tax base, especially for our schools, and this is Wilmette School District 39, which is small and our taxes are already pretty steep. My family lives about a mile north, nestled among Loyola Academy, New Trier West, the Skokie Material Yard, the high tension electric lines and even the State's Northfield salt dome. If you want to see traffic, come by us some school morning or afternoon, or evening or game day. If you want to hear the Edens, feel free. Earlier: Residents …

Firefighters don't get the holidays off.

Friday, December 30, 2011
The following is a letter to the editor from Adam L. of Wilmette. While we are celebrating the holidays with our family and friends, it is important to remember those who cannot. Instead of spending time with friends and family, firefighters are celebrating with their second family, their fellow firefighters. Most of us are lucky not to need the assistance of the Wilmette Fire Department, but it is important to remember that they are always available for the residents of Wilmette. They're happy to help with something as simple as resetting a fire alarm to something as intricate as administering top quality medical care to a person having a medical emergency. Firefighters risk their lives for others every single day they go to work. Please …

Wow, Willie Wilmette, you have it all figured out. Just a floating pier and they can take care of everyone on their waiting list? It seems naive to think that they could add a hundred spaces with a pier. Have you ever been there? They pack them in. Have you ever seen it when the MWRD opens the river into the harbor, what a mess a floating pier would be piled up in the corner with all those boats …   more ›
