Poll: Are Schools Doing Enough to Stop Hazing, Bullying?

Three plaintiffs were added to a lawsuit against Maine West High School that alleges coaches condoned hazing.

A lawsuit against Maine West High School alleges that students were hazed and bullied, sometimes at the behest of coaches of some athletic teams. A police investigation into a hazing incident this year led to charges against six students. During a “campus run” the boy’s teammates grabbed him, according to the lawsuit, tore off his underwear, held him down so he could not resist, grabbed his testicles and sodomized him with their fingers and other foreign objects. Des Plaines police told the Chicago Sun-Times that they sought felony charges in the case, but Cook County prosecutors disagreed. Prosecutors said there was not enough evidence for the more serious charges and settled on misdemeanors, the Sun-Times reported. Since that initial …

I can't believe how many people think this is normal behavior. First of all this is rape by obvious homosexuals. I don't know about the other guys here but forcing another guy down and grabbing his testicles and forcing fingers into his anus is not only extremely gay but also rape. How any of you can say that kids today whine too much blows me away. Add to all this is the fact that the coach …   more ›

Lady Trevians Advance to Regional Finals

After defeating Maine West Tuesday, New Trier will face Niles West for the third time this season in Thursday's regional final.

If defense wins championships, then New Trier looks to be in pretty good shape come Thursday night. The Trevians (17-11) hounded Maine West (11-15) defensively, allowing only 10 first-half points, and cruising to a 59-29 victory over the Warriors in the IHSA Class 4A Niles West regional semi-finals. New Trier, the No. 5 seed in the Maine East Sectional, will face Niles West, the section’s No. 3 seed, on Thursday night for a chance to win a regional championship for the second time in three years. New Trier raced out to a 12-0 lead only four minutes in thanks to a defense that forced seven first-quarter turnovers. Maine West missed its first six shots from the field before Stephanie O’Neil hit a three-pointer from the left corner to put the…

Area Coaches Weigh in on IHSA Lacrosse Series Delay

New Trier's lacrosse coach, Tom Herrala, told Patch that IHSA sponsorship is key to the sports growth.

The latest news from the sport of high school lacrosse is—well, no news, at least for the rest of this academic year. On Jan. 10, the board of directors of the Illinois High School Association, which oversees high school sports in the state, delayed the start of the boys and girls lacrosse state series until the 2011-2012 school year at the earliest. In October of 2009, the IHSA Board approved the start of a boys and girls lacrosse state series as early as this spring, contingent upon 65 boys' teams and 40 girls' teams entering into the state tournament. But only 47 boys' teams and 33 girls' teams were entered to participate in the state tournament at the time of the January board meeting, and the board decided to delay the start of the …

New Trier's Defense Overwhelms Maine West

Trevians open up large lead early, run away with 55-32 victory.

It's difficult for any team to overcome a season-ending injury to a star player. Trying to make up for the loss of three major contributors is a unenviable task for any coach. But that's the position New Trier's girls varsity team now finds itself in. Already dealing with injuries to seniors Abbey Schmitt and Hayley Campbell, the Trevians may have lost another starter in Jessica Blackwell. Lately, it seems like every game brings a new starting lineup. Fortunately for New Trier (7-4, 0-3 CSL South), the constant rotation of players hasn't affected their recent play. In their second-to-last game before a 10-day layoff over winter break, the Trevians easily defeated Maine West on the road, 55-32 "It takes a little bit to get used to, working …
