The Winnetka location is the 5th on the North Shore for the family-owned business.
Once Upon a Bagel has officially opened the doors of its Winnetka location, holding a grand opening last Thursday. The business had a soft opening late December, opening its doors for the public shortly before the holiday season. The Winnetka space is the 5th location for the family-run chain — which includes another Once Upon a Bagel location in Highland Park, Once Upon a Grill and Once Upon a Deli in Northbrook and the Mean Wiener in Highwood. Gerry and Steve Geffen, the father-and-son team who own the North Shore chain, chose to open a location in Winnetka because of supportiveness of the community. “It’s a close-knit community,” Steve Geffen said. “Everyone wants everyone else do to do well. … We felt the most comfortable in this …

The North Shore Exchange will offer designer women’s clothing and accessories, as well as home furnishings and décor.
A new upscale resale shop, the North Shore Exchange (NSE), is set to open in downtown Glencoe on March 5, in the former location of the Glen Cote Thrift Shop. The building is owned by the Glencoe Women’s Library Club. All of the NSE’s profits will go to charities and non-profits, with one-third staying in the community and the other two-thirds going to programs that serve needy children and families in the Chicagoland area. “The [Glen Cote] thrift shop had really gone downhill in the last six to 10 years,” said Wendy Serrino, president of the North Shore Exchange board. “The Women’s Library Club didn’t know what to do with it.” For more local businesses stories, sign up for the Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch's free newsletter. The store located at the former Demas Fine Foods, on 414 Linden Ave., is scheduled to open Sept. 7. The business owners hope to partner with New Trier High School programs in the future.
Growing up, Marsha Pesavento loved lingering around the “fancy” food section of grocery stores in New York. Now Pesavento, along with her husband Ray, will be pouring that passion into a new grocery store in Wilmette. “When I was 6-years-old I loved hanging out and looking at the canned escargot and all this wild stuff that was so exciting,” Marsha said. “I’ve always loved grocery stores.” The 3,200-square-foot store at 414 Linden Ave. will focus on selling artisanal foods made by people who are completely and wholly integrated into the creation of their product, from sourcing raw materials to the actual production and packaging. “We feel it’s critical to support local business, as that only strengthens our community,” Ray said. …

Wilmette trustees requested more noise-level data for the proposed carwash near Edens Plaza.
A proposed car wash at the Shell gas station near Edens Plaza has been tabled until the Oct. 23 village board meeting after Wilmette trustees requested more data on the plan. “I feel like we are making a great decision here without great data and it’s the applicants responsibility to bring us good data,” Trustee Cameron Kruger said during the Aug. 28 village board meeting. The proposed $1.2 million plan would have added a gas pump, a drive-through car wash and a convenience store at the roughly 16,000-square foot space at 3501 Lake Ave., which is located in the village’s neighborhood retail zone. Would you support building a carwash at Shell? Sound off on our Facebook page or in our poll below. Among the zoning variations, Wilmette …
