Gov. Quinn Addresses New Trier Township

Gov. Quinn discussed his plans for the future of the state at a New Trier Democrats-hosted event.

Gov. Pat Quinn spoke to New Trier residents on Sunday in Winnetka concerning a variety of topics, the Sun-Times reported. About 60 people — which the Sun-Times noted were mostly Democrats — attended his speech. Two primary topics that he spoke of included the 2014 budget the he recently proposed and gun control — notably the proposed concealed and carry law.  The Sun-Times article stated that Quinn said that he had always been against the concealed carry law. He also called his recent $35.6 billion budget the "most painful ever" due to cuts that had to be made.  For more news on politics, 'like' the Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch on Facebook and sign up for our free daily newsletter here.

Veteran Speaks Out Against Gun Control

Kevin Tully spoke out at the New Trier Democrats panel on gun control, and was featured in Glenn Beck's 'The Blaze.'

Kevin Tully, an Air Force veteran who spoke out against gun control to a standing ovation at a New Trier Democrats' gun panel held last Sunday, has been featured in an interview on 'The Blaze,' a news website co-created by media personality Glenn Beck.  "I’m not a liberal, I’m not a conservative, I’m not a Republican, I’m not a Democrat.  I’m an American — I believe in the Constitution, I believe in our country," Tully told The Blaze.  “Throughout history, any king or emperor that wanted to oppress the people– with whatever their views were, their new laws or taxes– the very first thing they did was they went around and rounded up everybody’s weapons,” he added in The Blaze interview.  “It didn’t matter if it was clubs or all the way up to…

Kevin Tully, an Air Force veteran. My Opinon??? Fighting a war from the air is totally antiseptic. Mr Tully has a opinon I respect that, but he should have tried being a grunt in the Maribe Corps. I would like to bet he would change his mind on assault weapons. These mass killers would be even more deadly if they knew how to effectly use the weapon and didn't blow their brains out before law …   more ›

New Trier Gun Control Panelist Reacts to Protests

Bill Jenkins, a panelist at Sunday's gun control panel, discusses his stance in this letter to the editor.

To the Editor, I was the featured speaker at the New Trier Democrats’ event on gun violence last Sunday. Word had gone out from the Illinois State Rifle Association warning that this would be a “recruitment andorganizational rally” and “These are the people leading the charge to raid your gun safe and confiscateand destroy your guns. … These are the people who don't care if you or your family members are raped, robbed and murdered by violent criminals. They only care about one thing - disarming you.” Althoughnot at all true, it was with this incitement that gun advocates came from all over the state to our littleevent, loaded for bear, as it were. From the moment they hijacked the meeting’s agenda by turning the Pledge of Allegiance into …

Commenters React to Gun Debate

Commenters express their opinions regarding the on-going gun debate.

Tensions ran high at a panel on gun control last Sunday, as pro-gun advocates intentionally packed the Glenview Police Station auditorium for the event, which was held by the New Trier Democrats. The debate has continued, however, in the Patch comment sections on the articles about the panel. “It was a pretty intense environment,” said commenter Jennifer Mcquet. “On the way out, had a very engaging conversation with two intelligent, well-informed NRA gentlemen (not to be confused with those that were not acting in a civil fashion and just loudly sprouting their own stats). They did not know one another, but shared their individual viewpoints with us and we did with them. All of agreed we could agree on background checks and longer waiting …

Winnetka Murder Victim's Sister Turns Gun Control Activist

In the 22 years since Nancy Bishop Langert's murder, her sister Jennifer Jenkins-Bishop has become a passionate control advocate.

In 1990, Nancy Bishop Langert, who was three months pregnant, was shot to death along with her husband, Richard Langert, in  their Winnetka townhome. Twenty-two years later, her legacy continues to inspire others — demonstrated by the fact that she used her last few minutes of life to spell out one last message of love. “She dragged herself to her husband and drew a heart and ‘U’ in her own blood,” Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins, Nancy’s sister, explained at a New Trier Democrats panel on gun control held Sunday. The Langerts had been shot with a .357 Magnum in the basement of their Winnetka home by David Biro, a New Trier High School senior, according to an April 9, 1992 Chicago Reader article. Biro, who was sentenced to life in prison without …

Gun Ownership Advocates Intentionally Pack Panel

Boisterous members of the Illinois State Rifle Association filled the auditorium at the New Trier Democrats panel Sunday, often yelling at speakers. A mass email urged them to show up early so that their supports dominated the crowd.

Gun ownership advocates intentionally packed Sunday’s gun control panel by the New Trier Democrats, as pro-gun advocates — who were encouraged to come from across the state in a mass email from the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) — argued and yelled at panelists throughout the program.  “Remember, this is our Lexington, this is our Concord,” the email read. “Be prepared to teach the gun controllers a lesson in liberty.” The email also encouraged attendees to arrive between an hour and half an hour early, to “ensure that there are more of OUR people there than THEIR people,” according to the email. That resulted in venue at the Glenview Police Station auditorium filling up, with many would-be attendees turned away at the door. The …

Opinions Collide at Gun Control Forum

Panel hosted by New Trier Democrats heavily attended by pro-gun advocates.

The New Trier Democrats' panel on gun control turned raucous Sunday, with some members of the audience yelling and interrupting during the speakers. The panel, which was held at the Glenview Police Station auditorium, was entitled “Guns and Public Safety: Where We Stand After Sandy Hook,” and aimed to discuss issues related to guns, including legislation, victims, conceal and carry laws and the history behind the nation's current laws. The crowd, which was so big that many attendees were turned away at the door, was largely made up of National Rifle Association (NRA) members and other pro-gun advocates from around the state. Many were there because of an Illinois State Rifle Association email sent out asking members to come, and some were…

Gun Forum Moved to Glenview to Accommodate Crowd

The free public forum will focus on the issues of school shootings, gun laws and what should be done to prevent future massacres.

The New Trier Democrats will host a free public forum on gun control on Sunday at 2 p.m, entitled "Guns and Public Safety: Where We Stand After Sandy Hook." The forum has been moved to the Glenview Police Station Auditorium, 2500 East Lake Avenue in Glenview, because organizers are prepping for “an anticipated larger audience,” according to an article in Wilmette Life. It was originally going to be held at the Wilmette Public Library. The forum will focus on a variety of gun-related topics, including concealed carry laws, gun statistics, school shootings, gun registration and what's happening in Congress. The executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association told Wilmette Life that members from his organization will attend the …

I attended the event with my 8 yr. old Son, D.J. and we had a great time with our pals from Illinois Riflemans Association and Conceal Carry.com It was a great turn out, with over 90% attending, being from our Pro-Gun Groups. New Trier Democrats to Host Gun Forum

The organization will host a free public forum entitled 'Guns and Public Safety: Where We Stand After Sandy Hook' at the Wilmette Public Library.

A month after the school shooting in Newtown, CT, the New Trier Democrats will host a panel on gun issues — including school shootings, assault weapons, concealed carry, background checks and gun statistics —on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Wilmette Public Library.  Presenters at the forum include Mark Walsh of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, Lee Goodman of the Stop Concealed Carry Coalition and Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins of the Million Moms March. "Like people all across America, people in the northern suburbs were stunned by the shootings in Connecticut," Goodman said. "They want to see a major shift in our nation's attitude towards violence. We are organizing the forum in Wilmette to help get people the information they need in …

I attended the event as a pro gunner open to change. I feel that there should be background checks and a hold period but in no way do I support worthless laws like magazine limits and semi auto bans. So coming in I was going to hold a neutral opinion till I started hearing the speakers. Never did I think it would be so unprofessional and obvious distorted truths. One example was crime statistics …   more ›
