Former 'Playboy' Editor and Wilmette Native Opens Portrait Studio

Jeff Cohen spent more than 30 years traveling the country to take photos of celebrities and models for Hugh Hefner. Now, the Wilmette native is taking intimate, black and white portraits in Highland Park.

In 1967, Jeff Cohen went on his first photo shoot for his new boss: Hugh Hefner. "I was 22 and I had a job at Playboy," the 68-year-old said. "I became an instant celebrity." In 1974, he photographed Clint Eastwood at his studio in California, after the two ate sandwiches together, drank a few beers and compared shoes.  "There was a knock on the door, and there was Clint," he said. "We both had bought the same pair of sneakers." Soon after, Cohen did a shoot with Cindy Crawford, who showed up to his place without the now-typical celebrity entourage of publicists and assistants. "She came by herself. They never do that anymore." Last Saturday, Cohen took photos of a father, his four children and their black Labrador.  The dog sat on a black…

New Trier Graduate and former Wilmette Resident Writes Novel

Pete David's first novel, "Mother Nature's Son," was inspired by his career working with natural resources.

Pete David, a '76 New Trier graduate and former Wilmette resident, became interested in writing during his freshman year English class, although he didn't even consider writing a novel until years later.  "About four years ago, my wife and I were listening to a Carl Hiasson book on CD and I mentioned that I could write as well, if not better," he said. "She challenged me to write a book and that's when I started focusing on my writing." Mother Nature's Son — which follows a federal wildlife officer, Lee Reynolds, as he's recruited to work for an eco-terrrist group that performs a cyber-crime with the intent of redistributing the wealth to help the environment — was inspired by David's 25-year career in natural resources, working with state…

New Trier Graduate to Open Evanston Brewery

Construction has begun on the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery, owned by a New Trier graduate and former Winnetka resident.

It’s a new day in Evanston—once a dry community and the national headquarters of the temperance movement—where a gin distillery is up and running, a bar devoted to craft beers just opened downtown and what could be the city’s first brewery is slated to open at 1615 Oak Ave. this summer.  Owner Michael Smylie, who grew up in Winnetka and graduated from New Trier High School in 1995, will be opening the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery in August or September. The Brewery will serve a variety of craft beers brewed in house, as well as barbecue and wood-fired pizza, among other offerings.   “Considering that Evanston was dry…it’s really the first brewery in its history, which is pretty cool,” says owner Michael Smylie.  The brewpub is also …
