The Northwestern University sophomore drowned in Wilmette Harbor last September. Police say he had a blood alcohol content roughly twice the legal limit for driving.
Evanston police say alcohol was a contributing factor in the accidental drowning of Northwestern University sophomore Harsha Maddula, whose body was found in Wilmette Harbor in September 2012. A toxicology report from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office indicated that Maddula had a blood alcohol level of .125, or roughly 1.5 times the legal driving limit of .08, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott. “Although the medical examiner is determining the death to be a drowning, and the cause undetermined, the investigation from the police department appears to show that this was accidental in nature with a contributing factor being alcohol consumption,” Parrott told Patch. Maddula, a pre-med student from Garden City Park, NY, …

19-year-old Northwestern University sophomore Josie Nordman needs a lung transplant to survive, but her family can’t foot the $75,000 bill on their own.
Northwestern University sophomore Josie Nordman was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a chronic and frequently fatal lung disease, when she was only four years old. Now, at 19, the Homewood native is left with only 22 percent of her lung function. She was added to the lung transplant list on Dec. 12. A transplant is her only hope of surviving. Unfortunately, that hope comes with a hefty $750,000 price tag, according to her mother, Nicolle Nordman. While the family's insurance will cover the bulk of that amount, the Nordman family will be left with a bill of $50,000 to $75,000, much more than they can afford. “We are struggling to pay our monthly bills due to so many medical costs that we have no idea how to come up with this kind of money,” …

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story contained incorrect information that the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office provided to Patch. Officials expect that a complete toxicology report, due to be completed in the next few weeks, will show whether or not there was alcohol or insulin in Maddula's body at the time of his death. One month after his body was found in Wilmette Harbor, Evanston Police say they are still searching for clues in the death of Northwestern University student Harsha Maddula. Cmdr. Jason Parrott, a spokesperson for the department, said that police continue to interview students who attended a party where Maddula was last seen alive. Advertisers 'played it safe' this year, professor says.
If you're made of chocolate, it's okay to dance suggestively. If you're a scantily clad lady, not so much. That's at least partly the message in the ranking of best and worst Super Bowl ads by Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. This is the eighth year the school's faculty and students have ranked the most anticipated ads of the year. "What's notable about this year versus others is that advertisers played it safe. As a result, we saw fewer standouts, but we also didn't see as many costly mistakes," Clinical Professor of Marketing Tim Calkins said in an article about the ranking on the school's website. Here's the school's list of the top and bottom four. Let us know in our polls below if you agree with the choices. The…

Had a doctor at the U of A tell me that binge drinking is rampant. How many alcohol related deaths will it take …   more ›
