About 10 years ago, I bought a Canon PowerShot digital camera. It was heavy, it took up my entire pocket and the 32MB memory card it came with meant it did not have the capacity for many pictures. The performance was slow, the flash was awful and the zoom was even worse. I loved it. I carried that camera with me everywhere for years. Sure, it was only two megapixels, but that was basically cutting edge for point and shoot cameras at the time, and leaps and bounds better than any cell phone. Things have changed since then. As iPhones and phones like it become more commonplace, and the cameras on those phones become increasingly higher quality, the consumer's need for the additional weight of a digital camera continues to diminish. Growing up Katy Drucker has always had a love affair with Africa. In 2010, she decided it was time to pursue her passion for travel and photography. The New Trier alum spent three-years of savings to fund her 11-month travel across Africa and Asia. “I thought if I don’t do it now, I won’t be able to do it again,” Drucker said. “The whole year was supposed to be solely in Africa, but there was political turmoil in western Africa so I headed back to India, where I had been before.” Saturday, the 30-year-old Wilmette-based photographer will be exhibiting images from her travels at Winnetka Community House. Bank customers and visitors will be treated to a free art exhibit this month at the Noth Shore Community Bank as the bank hosts "Tapestry of Travels", a photography exhibit including the work of a dozen Wilmette photographers. Plaza Del Lago played host to the 6th Annual Juried Fine Arts Fair, featuring paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures and jewelry by over two dozen artists from around the world. Artists partaking in the show came from as far away as Oklahoma and Israel. The North Shore Art League puts on the event and for 87 years has been "enriching the human spirit through art education and exhibitions."
