Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. Kirk returned to the Senate (in January after suffering a stroke a year before),” Durbin said. “We wanted it to be here because it is something we worked on together.” Sequester Reduces …

Before speaking to New Trier Democratic Organization, Illinois Senator tells Patch he would like to make it harder to block legislation.
Frustrated with Senate Republicans blocking a Democratic majority of 51 senators from passing President Barack Obama’s American Jobs Act, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) said he's willing to change the filibuster rule to require dissenting legislators to speak continually against a bill. Durbin expressed his wish to return to the pre-2005 filibuster requirements before keynoting the New Trier Democratic Organization annual dinner Sunday in Northbrook, where more than 250 people gathered to hear his remarks. Earlier: Garrett’s Career Got Boost From Durbin “If the Republicans are willing to interrupt the business of the Senate and bring it to a halt, they should be willing to interrupt their dinner plans,” said Durbin, the Senate majority whip. …

Senator mentored state senator during her first campaign.
If it had not been for the encouragement of Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield), state Sen. Susan Garrett's (D-Lake Forest) political career may never have been. The account of Durbin’s efforts for Garrett was just one of the stories told about the retiring state senator when she received the Ab Mikva Political Courage Award from the Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) last Sunday at the Highland Park Country Club. “He really mentored me,” Garrett said of her first campaign for the Illinois General Assembly in 1998. Durbin was one of more than 250 people at the Tenth Dems annual fall event. In addition to honoring Garrett, the gathering rallied local Democrats as campaign activities for the March 20 primary and the …

The field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) for the revamped 10th Congressional District seat in the Nov. 2012 general election grew by one when Vivek Bavda, 34, of Mundelein joined the race. Bavda, a Chicago attorney, filed his intention to make the race with the Federal Election Commission Sept. 3, but his appearance surprised a crowd of more than 250 who gathered Sunday at the Highland Park Country Club to honor retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Garrett was lauded by people like Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) as she received the Ab Mikva Political Courage Award from the Tenth Congressional District …

Residents want Washington politicians to work together.
While North Suburban members of Congress continued to disagree on how to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, citizens shopping at the Lake Forest and Highland Park Jewel Stores spoke of their representatives’ inability to compromise. The House of Representatives passed its version of a package to allow the federal government to borrow more money on a 218-210 vote. The bill will cut government spending $971 billion over 10 years. It will also require the passage of a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution before another increase in February. The looming default by the United States remains a possibility as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) has pronounced the bill “dead on arrival” when it arrives in the upper chamber. …
