Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. Biden was the first person to greet Kirk when he appeared at the bottom of the steps, giving him a hug. Next to hug his returning colleague at the bottom of the stairs was Sen. Richard Durbin (D-…

In the weeks remaining in his term, he expressed hope a deal could be structured to keep the country from going over the fiscal cliff of the expiration of the Bush era tax cuts and mandated spending reductions. Earlier: Schneider Beats Dold in 10th District Race “Governing in a democracy is not easy,” Dold said. “It requires compromise. It requires working together. Congresswoman likes the law as it is while Dold thinks change is necessary.
(Update, 6:40 p.m.) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) criticized what she called the 33rd effort of the House Republican majority to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act after today’s vote to eliminate the law. She thinks the time should be devoted to job creation. “Though Republicans took control of the House with the promise that they will focus on jobs, they have wasted more than 43 hours of floor time on legislation to repeal Obamacare,” Schakowsky said. Schakowsky likes the health care law as it is. She praises how it has already helped millions of Americans by eliminating caps on their insurance, allowing children under 16 to remain on their parents’ policies and insuring care for youngsters with pre-existing conditions. “I …
