Jeff Farina scored the only goal in New Trier's 1-0 victory over Leyden that was called early because of lightning storms on Tuesday.
They say timing is everything. And right now New Trier seems to have everything going its way. After a scoreless first half against Leyden in the sectional semifinal at Evanston, New Trier’s Jeff Farina put the Trevians (9-10-1) on top 1-0 six minutes into the second half. Then the weather came. The referees stopped play with 28:24 remaining in the second half because of lightning storms in the area and, after a delay of more than an hour and 30 minutes, declared New Trier the winner on Tuesday. “I don’t know if I’ve been involved in anything like this before, it’s just really strange,” New Trier coach Craig Fairbairn said. “They have to do things; they have to get this game in, this and that.” New Trier moves on to the sectional …

Football improved to 8-0 while cross country won the conference title.
Football: Loyola improved to 8-0 on the season with a 20-13 win over Brother Rice on Friday night. Brother Rice’s only touchdown came on a kickoff return for a touchdown from Martez Walker. QB Malcolm Weaver was knocked out of the game in the third quarter after scrambling for a first down. The senior quarterback was hit hard in the helmet and junior Peter Pujals came in to replace Weaver. Leland Later wins another cross-country meet while soccer falls to Glenbrook South.
Football: New Trier coach Dan Starkey says there are no moral victories for his team. But it doesn’t mean that losses can’t be useful. “We did not put a full game together this past Friday against Maine South, but we had a fantastic first half and were really playing well in all three phases of the game,” Starkey said. “We know what we’re capable of and we can be a very good football team.” The emotions New Trier felt coming off the field after its 40-24 loss in Week 5 to Maine South--No. 1 in the recent Patch rankings--were completely different than its season-opening loss to Schaumburg, when the Trevians looked lost offensively and unsure of itself. A lot of that has to do with the more consistent play of quarterback Jack Nykaza. After a…

Football wins its second straight game while soccer drops a couple of games to league foes.
CROSS-COUNTRY - New Trier cross-country coach Dave Wisner is making some changes this year. They aren’t drastic alterations that come after disappointing seasons or repeated failure--after all, the Trevians took seventh at last year’s state championships. Rather they are minor tweaks that Wisner thinks can give New Trier one of its best showings in school history. Typically cross-country teams focus on building a base early in the season, putting in lots of distance runs. As the season moves closer, the mileage drops and the emphasis in practice is more about speed and repeats. Wisner will stick to that plan, but move back the speed sessions even further. He’ll switch over to that in early October when only a handful of races remain in the…
