The needles are falling and the charm is fading. Soon enough, it will be time to take down the Christmas tree. But what's the protocol? It's a different set of rules, depending on where you live. In Kenilworth, the village will pick up and get rid of all trees and wreaths placed on the curbside. All decorations, lights and tinsel need to be removed prior to collection, according to the village newsletter. Pick up ends Jan. 28. And if you live in a residence with an alley, village officials say you'll still need to bring trees and wreaths to the front for curbside pickup. Wilmette, on the other hand, has not had a Christmas tree recycling program since 2005, according to Margrit Kuehn, vice presidnet of Go Green Wilmette. "Our …

Villagers sang carols with Santa during the holiday event.
Shortly after sunset, residents and their families gathered around the tree near the Kenilworth Avenue fountain to watch the first holiday tree lighting in Kenilworth. Children threw snowballs and guests lit candles together and sang carols huddled around the tree. After a surprise visit from Santa, the lights were turned on and were met with cheers of excitement. "It's a great way to start the holidays," explained Debby Ponko, a Kenilworth Club board member. "All of the other villages do it so we wanted to have our own." After the tree lighting, guests warmed up near the fireplace at the Kenilworth Club with hot cocoa and cookies. Families also lined up to greet Santa and have their pictures taken. "I loved the candles and how …

Friday night's holiday festivities shed "greener" light on a Wilmette tradition. The annual holiday tree lighting featured more than three times the bulbs and less than 1/30 of the watt usage, according to village officials. "It's fun to live in a small town and see friends at events like this—that's what I enjoy," said Caryn Kelly, a five-year resident who had never attended the event before. Kelly was accompanied by her daughters Lauren, 5, and Amelia, 8. "It was wonderful, we liked the tree a lot." It's not just residents who come to check out the lights. Bill Westfall, who lives in Glenview, has watched the tree lighting for five years. "Glenview doesn't have the good lights." Westfall said, "They don't have anything like this—this …
