Illinois Baseball Academy is scheduled to open a new 5,000-square-feet training center in November.
For baseball lovers who hate training outdoors in winter, Illinois Baseball Academy will soon be offering a new option. The new indoor training facility, The Yard, 164 Northfield Rd., Northfield, is outfitted with hitting cages, a pitching tunnel and an open area for fielding work. “The batting cages allow us to give four lessons at any one time,” said Chris Beacome, president of Illinois Baseball Academy. “We are able to move [our cages] and our cables. The Wilmette Optimist Club made a donation to help reconstruct Roemer Park's first-base dugout.
Back in the 1950s, the Wilmette Optimist Club was one of the original sponsors of little league baseball at Roemer Park. So when the Wilmette Baseball Association decided it was time to do a major upgrade on the town's historic baseball stadium, the Optimist Club saw it as another opportunity to continue their long-time relationship. The Wilmette Baseball Association held a Memorial Day gala at Roemer Park with numerous all-star games.
For more than 50 years, Roemer Park served as Wilmette's premier little league baseball facility. And after its most recent rennovation, the Wilmette Baseball Association is looking to keep it that way. Although the baseball season started in April, Memorial Day served as the unofficial Opening Day for little league baseball in Wilmette as three all-star games were played at Roemer Park. "It looks pretty much the same as it did back [in 1955] so our restoration kept pretty much all of the old stuff," said Sid Tepps, the president of the Wilmette Baseball Association.
