Going Green

Go Green Wilmette at Summerfest

The nonprofit braved the thunderstorms to share information on how to save money on electricity while saving the environment.

When Go Green Wilmette requested a booth at Wilmette’s Summerfest on July 13 and 14 they didn’t expect the excitement that took place. The booth’s theme was Renewable Electricity with “green” electricity attractions that included a windmill, solar panels and a bike that produced electricity when ridden. Electricity was also produced by two thunderstorms that made manning the booth especially challenging, but Go Green Wilmette volunteers weren’t about to harness that. Instead, they hunkered down and waited it out. “The rain’s no problem as long as we’re here for something good,” said Greg Vasilion, who was caught in the storms on both afternoons. This year’s event drew more visitors than any previous year and at least 100 visitors stopped …

Going Green

A Great Opportunity for Wilmette Small Businesses and the Community

A Illinois Institute of Technology graduate student is helping Wilmette businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Go Green Wilmette is helping Beth Baxter, a graduate student at Illinois Institute of Technology, in her work with the Village of Wilmette, and the Wilmette Chamber of Commerce as she helps businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and, thus, improve the quality of our air. Baxter is doing an independent study for credit towards her masters in Environmental Management and has undertaken the task, as part of her project, to help Wilmette small businesses use less electricity and gas. “When a business has an efficient space, it needs less electricity and gas to run its operation and when it needs less energy, it uses less. As a result, that business saves money and also helps the environment by creating less air pollution,” she said…

Photos: Wilmette Summerfest

Downtown Wilmette comes alive for weekend celebration.

Wilmette hosted its second annual Summerfest on July 13 and 14, with expanded offerings for guests young and old. Despite heat and afternoon storms both days, attendees enjoyed two days of live music and performances, a sidewalk sale, a car show, a children's area, a beer tent, and plenty of food. Wilmette Chamber of Commerce hosted the event with the assistance of Wilmette Park District and the village.  "It's a great way for the community to pull together and for us to feature our businesses and show everything Wilmette has to offer," said Sarah Mcvey, president of the Chamber of Commerce. PHOTO GALLERY: Wilmette Kicks of Holiday Season with Parade

Community organizations, businesses and entertainers participated in the annual procession.

A motorcycle riding Santa, Christmas trees, a stilt-walker and a full marching band were just part of the entertainment proceeding through the streets of Wilmette Nov. 19 during the Willmette Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday parade. Locals of all ages packed the streets on the warm, but windy morning as the procession kicked off at the intersection of Fourth Street and Linden Avenue, proceeding to Village Center.  Many groups offered entertainment along the route, including Shriners driving mini-cars, employees of the Wilmette Park District dressed in costumes representing different programs and Loyola Academy’s marching band playing holiday tunes. Some particularly prepared parade watchers set up chairs and blankets along the route …
