The nonprofit braved the thunderstorms to share information on how to save money on electricity while saving the environment.
When Go Green Wilmette requested a booth at Wilmette’s Summerfest on July 13 and 14 they didn’t expect the excitement that took place. The booth’s theme was Renewable Electricity with “green” electricity attractions that included a windmill, solar panels and a bike that produced electricity when ridden. Electricity was also produced by two thunderstorms that made manning the booth especially challenging, but Go Green Wilmette volunteers weren’t about to harness that. Instead, they hunkered down and waited it out. “The rain’s no problem as long as we’re here for something good,” said Greg Vasilion, who was caught in the storms on both afternoons. Downtown Wilmette comes alive for weekend celebration.
Wilmette hosted its second annual Summerfest on July 13 and 14, with expanded offerings for guests young and old. Despite heat and afternoon storms both days, attendees enjoyed two days of live music and performances, a sidewalk sale, a car show, a children's area, a beer tent, and plenty of food. Wilmette Chamber of Commerce hosted the event with the assistance of Wilmette Park District and the village. "It's a great way for the community to pull together and for us to feature our businesses and show everything Wilmette has to offer," said Sarah Mcvey, president of the Chamber of Commerce.
