Several area wrestlers qualified for state at a sectional tournament in Barrington this past weekend.
Five New Trier High School wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament this past weekend after placing at the Barrington sectional meet, according to IHSA results. With more than 8,000 votes cast, see who took this week's honor as Athlete of the Week
After more than 8,000 votes were cast, Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week. Bess took third place in the 220-pound division at the Class 3A wrestling state championships last weekend. Bess beat Mt. Carmel junior David Denne 3-1 in the third-place match and finished the season with a record of 40-2. He garnered 5,079 votes, or 61 percent. HONORABLE MENTION Lauren Kriz, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Kriz tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Ramblers’ 46-31 win over Evanston in the Class 4A Evanston Regional finals. More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Boys Basketball: New Trier has rebounded well from its lone loss of the season to No. 2 Warren. The Trevians won back-to-back games over Central Suburban League South opponents, defeating Niles West and Glenbrook South convincingly. New Trier will play in the ultra-competitive Proviso West Holiday Tournament after Christmas Day. The Trevians are slotted to take on Fenwick in the opening round on Dec. 27. Good for building character As an individual sport, most people wouldn’t necessarily think of wrestling as an activity that fosters team bonding. But youth wrestling clubs provide a unique chance for children to learn from older athletes. While high schools teams only incorporate youth whose age difference is at most three years, the TWC involves wrestlers from first through eighth grade. “The 8- to 10-year-olds really look up to the big kids,” Michelle McKenna said. “There were great kids who were great role models that really take them under their wing.” She has seen Alec transform from an impressionable …

Trevian club competitors start at an early age as sport seeks a prominent place in the Wilmette landscape.
This is the first in a two-part series examining the status and growth of wrestling in the North Shore. Alec McKenna didn’t immediately flourish in sports as a youngster. Although he possessed the necessary athleticism and coordination to run around a soccer field or dribble a basketball, Alec lacked the self-confidence needed to be assertive. So at the advice of some family friends, his mother, Michelle, signed him up for a wrestling camp in third grade. After one week, Alec was hooked. He registered for the Trevian Wrestling Club (TWC) in 2005 and has stuck with it since. Now an eighth-grade student at Washburne middle school, Alec is thriving in the sport. The Trevians' winter sports are heading to the post season with high expectations.
GYMNASTICS: Coach Jennifer Vargas has been waiting for her team to put it together. She knew they had the talent to put up high scores, but the consistency wasn’t there. But in their last dual meet before the post season, New Trier had their breakthrough match, posting their highest team score in a win against Warren, 144.15 – 134.9. The win included personal high scores for Monica Wolf and Elana Benishay. “[Elana] has always had the talent; she’s kind of still developing and gaining a little bit more confidence,” Vargas said. “She’s been fine-tuning and it finally hit.” New Trier competes in the Regional finals next Friday.
