Police warn to be cautious of phony phone calls for help.
Two Kenilworth seniors were victimized phone scams between Feb. 2 and 4, wiring more than $10,000 to help people they believed were their friends or family members. The Kenilworth police department issued a warning about the “Grandparents Scam,” a common scheme detailed on Western Union’s Consumer Protection guide. Callers target seniors, often impersonating their grandchild and asking the senior to wire thousands of dollars to help deal with an emergency like an arrest or accident. Burglary A $2,500 Cervelo bicycle was stolen between Jan. 16 and 17 from a garage in the 200 block of Oxford Road. Burglary to a Motor Vehicle An Xbox 360 and games were stolen from an unlocked car between Jan. 16 and 17 in the 100 block of Robsart Road. The loss is estimated at $450.

Scotson Colley, 18, of Winnetka and Joseph Goergen, 18, of Wisconsin, were arrested for marijuana possession at 2 a.m. Jan. 9 in the 500 block of Essex Road after their car was pulled over for a traffic violation.

The communities’ police chiefs and a private consultant recommended the move.
The villages of Kenilworth, Winnetka and Northfield are considering combining their police departments’ emergency dispatch services in order to save money on operating expenses and future technological upgrades. The move would take about $1.2 million to set up, but save approximately $158,331 each year, according to Elert & Associates Technology Consultants. That would be a 10 percent reduction in costs for the three departments, mostly coming from reduced labor costs. The three communities began discussing consolidating dispatch services in 2009. More than 700 people were injured and 15 were killed in car accidents last Thanksgiving season.
Holidays can be expensive, so try to avoid adding to the cost of the season by getting a ticket for driving without a seatbelt. "I urge everyone driving on Illinois roadways this holiday season to drive carefully, do not drive impaired and, most importantly, buckle up each and every trip, day or night," said Sgt. Dave Miller of the Kenilworth Police Department. "Remember, the best defense against an impaired or distracted driver is a safety belt." Illinois has a 92.9 percent daytime safety belt usage according to the Illinois Transportation Division of Safety. DUI A 43-year-old Indiana man was stopped in the 100 block of Sheridan Road on Oct. 15 for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Late-night program yielded three arrests, 130 tickets.
Kenilworth police put an extra emphasis on catching impaired drivers and seat belt violators on Labor Day as part of a federal program to make the roadways safer during late-night hours. Two people were arrested for impaired driving and one was arrested for drugs, while 130 tickets were issued between Aug. 19 and Sept. 5, police said. Citations were written for speeding and other moving violations, equipment infringements as well as failing to wear a seatbelt, Sgt. David Miller said. THEFT A bicycle was stolen from the Kenilworth Metra station, 400 Richmond Rd., between Aug. 8 and Aug. 10. The incident was reported on Sept. 2 at 1:15 p.m. DRIVING VIOLATIONS A Wheeling man was stopped in the 500 block of Green Bay Road at 2:45 a.m. Sept. 3 for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the 48-year-old motorist was driving under the influence of alcohol and on a revoked license. He was subsequently charged.
