November's Top 10 Headlines in Wilmette, Kenilworth

Police: Former New Trier Student Recognized While Burglarizing Acquaintance's Wilmette Home

A 19-year-old told police she had mutual friends with the man whom she saw in her home, according to police.

Wilmette Police arrested a 20-year-old former New Trier High School student Friday after a school acquaintance recognized him when he attempted to burglarize her home earlier that morning, police say. Russell Thomas, 20, of the 700 block of 11th Street, Wilmette, was charged with one felony count of residential burglary. A woman and her 19-year-old daughter told police that they were upstairs in their home, located in the 1200 block of Richmond Lane, when they heard noises coming from the first floor early Friday morning. The daughter said that when she went downstairs to investigate, she saw Thomas standing in the foyer, sifting through her mother’s purse, police reported. Last week: Polish Profanity Painted on School Roof Reckless Driving A 15-year-old Wilmette boy was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving without a license and other violations after he crashed a truck through a fence and hit a bike rack near McKenzie School, by the intersection of Schiller Avenue and Harvard Street, at approximately 5:19 p.m. on Nov. 21. Police reported they responded to call of a pickup truck doing donuts in a vacant lot. When they arrived at the scene, officers saw the truck leave and followed the vehicle into an area of McKenzie School. Jewelry Stolen or Targeted in Four Wilmette Incidents

Diamond rings, gold chains and wedding bands were reported stolen.

Jewelry was stolen or targeted in four Wilmette home burglaries and thefts during mid November, one in which nearly $4,000 worth of precious metals and jewels was taken, police reported. The incidents all occurred between Nov. 13 and Nov. 16, most during daylight hours. However, Wilmette police said it is unlikely that the incidents are connected. “At this time, there is nothing that links them,” said Wilmette Police Commander Patrick Collins. Collins said one incident, in which nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a home located in the 1100 block of Seneca Road sometime between 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, may not have been a burglary. Police: Wilmette Man Punched Driver in Face During Road Rage Incident

Police tracked the man after the victim supplied the offender's license plate number.

The following arrest information was provided by the Wilmette Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction. Wilmette police arrested a local man after he allegedly punched another man in the face during a road rage incident, police reported. Keith T. Clayton, 55, of the 1300 block of Maple Avenue, Wilmette, was charged with misdemeanor battery for his alleged role in the Nov. 16 incident. Police say a victim told them he was driving in the in the 3100 block of Glenview Road, near I-94, at 7:17 p.m., when Clayton abruptly stopped his car, exited his vehicle, asked the victim “do you have a problem” and then punched the man in the face. Last week: Man Arrested for Alleged Assault at Linden Station Criminal Damage An unknown offender caused approximately $300 damage to Romona School, 600 Romona Road, when the person spray painted a school wall sometime between 4 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 8:40 a.m. on Nov. 19. The offender gained access to the school roof and used black spray paint to write Polish profanity and a draw a smiley face. The offender also wrote the words “laugh” and “love” in blue and red spray paint. Cannabis Possession Two Wilmette teens were issued ordinance violations for possessions of cannabis and one Winnetka teen was issued a curfew violation after the three were stopped by police behind Wilmette Junior High, 620 Locust Road, at 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 20. …

Last week: 18 Wilmette Auto Burglaries in One Week Assault Randy McKenzie, 46, of the 3200 block of 49th Street, Cicero, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a CTA employee on the Linden station platform at 11:05 a.m. on Nov. 7. According to the police report, the victim said he had observed McKenzie smoking a cigarette on a train platform. When the victim told McKenzie to put the cigarette out, McKenzie allegedly became angered and began walking toward the train yard. The victim said he attempted to stop McKenzie, because passengers are not allowed in that area of the station. As the two walked back toward the train, McKenzie allegedly yelled at the victim, shoved him into a wooden storage box and threatened to beat him. Following the …

Police: 85-year-old Wilmette Man Charged After Pedestrian Hit and Run

Police reports indicate the elderly man admitted to panicking and leaving the scene.

An 85-year-old Wilmette man has been charged with a misdemeanor and three traffic offenses after he struck a 25-year-old local man while driving, police reported. Louis Kolpas, of the 2700 block of Lincoln Lane, Wilmette, allegedly struck the man while driving his car through the intersection of Lake Avenue and North Hibbard Road at 11:19 a.m. on Nov. 9. Police responders reported finding the victim, who is also reportedly a Wilmette resident, lying on his back in the curb lane, screaming and disoriented. The man told police he did not know what happened and said he felt pain in his legs. Three witnesses provided similar accounts of a white vehicle traveling northbound on Hibbard Road, striking the pedestrian and sending the man flying …

Crime Alert Warns of Local Burglaries

Auto, home and commercial burglaries were detailed.

In the first crime alert issued by Wilmette police since mid September, the department informed residents of several recent burglaries and burglary attempts. The alert, which was sent out Thursday afternoon, provided information on several recent auto, home and commercial burglaries, and asked residents with information concerning these crimes to contact the Wilmette Police Department. Last week: Man Threatens to Burn Wilmette Woman’s House Down ‘With Her and the Kids in It’ Theft Three teenage boys in a dark-colored SUV reportedly stole a tip jar containing approximately $20 from the drive-thru window of an eatery located in the 3500 block of Lake Avenue. According to the police report, the three teens pulled up to the drive thru window, ordered one coffee and one breakfast sandwich, paid with a gift card and got a receipt before grabbing the tip jar and speeding off. An employee told police that after she finished serving the teens, she turned away, and that is when the tip jar was stolen. The employee said that she did not recognize any of the offenders.
