District 39 and Wilmette Education Association to Begin Mediation on Contracts

After failing to come to an agreement on teachers' contracts on their own, the District 39 contract negotiations will now be mediated by a neutral third party.

The District 39 Board of Education and the Wilmette Education Association (WEA) announced Friday afternoon that mediations will soon begin to come to an agreement on a new teachers' contract. The Board and WEA have been in negotiations since Dec. 2012, with no final agreement reached yet.

Under state law, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board initiates mediation if a new contract is not agreed upon 45 days before the start of the school year. Both the Board and the WEA have requested that mediation be initiated. The mediater is a neutral third party and operates at no cost to the District or the WEA.

"The Board and the WEA have worked diligently over several months and both parties hope they will be able to come to a fair resolution with a mediator to facilitate the process, allowing the parties to conclude negotiations with a final agreement," a statement from the Board says.

District 39 serves elementary school students in Wilmette and in parts of Glenview and Winnetka.
